I’m a music history buff, or a music history nerd if you prefer. There’s an allure to learning about past musical events that make you wish you were there when they occurred. The experience of seeing The Ramones or Talking Heads play CBGBs, or experiencing the Belleville Three spin Techno in Detroit in the 80s, would be amazing to witness as both events shaped their respective genres. However, we view those events as important in hindsight. We now know that the Ramones proved that Rock doesn’t need fancy guitar licks and long tracks to have power. And we now know that the Belleville Three helped shape EDM into the powerhouse it is today.

As the the presidential election draws closer, many of us await the future with great anticipation. All of us seek a better future regardless of how different our anticipated paths may be, and thus the presidential election holds the attention of many as it plays a determining role in the policies that affect our lives. There are many ways to access information on politics these days to help determine which candidate to vote for, and it has never before been so easy to acquire such knowledge with the power of the internet, social media, television and the radio. Not surprisingly, as our network of information has grown, so has the range of the knowledge we are presented with—from petty personal blogs and comments to extensive records of the candidates’ lives. This trend begs several questions: What topics should we focus on, and how well should we know them?

Compared to voter turnouts in other developed countries, America doesn’t bode well. While we hover around 50 percent, Belgium and Turkey top the charts with roughly 88 percent and 86 percent respectively. Some may view this situation with a “glass-half-full” outlook, but excluding the aforementioned nations still leaves nearly 30 ahead of us. If we already don’t vote, why not just get rid of it altogether?

There’s a special place in my heart for the New York based, indie rock band Real Estate. I equate their music to hazy desert nights and overall content. This appreciation is due in large part to the warm, breezy vibes inherent in their sound, and in small part to my memory of making out with a guy in the front seat of his car while Real Estate’s Atlas (2014) soundtracked the occasion. When I saw Real Estate live for the first time in Madison on Saturday night, Oct. 8, my hopes for a similarly visceral experience fell short.

What do you think of when you hear the terms “Kinky” or “BDSM?” Do they conjure images of dominatrixes with whips? People tied up in dungeons? Maybe our brains go to pop culture and Rihanna or “Fifty Shades of Grey.”
