I'm sure you remember ""I'll huff, and I'll puff, and I'll blow
your house down!"" Since we were little kids, we have learned to
fear the wolf, the ""savage"" killer. Their eerie howl causes
chills to run down the spine of anyone in earshot. In reality, the
wolf is a vital predator, essential to the ecosystems it inhabits.
In recent years, Wisconsin has been blessed with the reintroduction
of wolves following migration from upper Minnesota. Lately,
however, this blessing has become too much of a good thing.

This happens to me every fall. I follow baseball religiously from
the day pitchers and catchers report to spring training, through
the entire summer and into September. But then the first NFL Sunday
rolls around and my interest drops right off the table.

Pilot Re-Shoot -- Ed Goodson (William Shatner) is a forthright and opinionated dad who relishes expressing his unsolicited and often wildly politically incorrect observations to anyone within earshot, on $#*! The birth of a television series begins with a pilot. The show's
creative team puts together one sample episode of the series, shows
that to the network execs, and hopes it gets picked up. That's
basically what this column is today, only you, dear readers, are
the network execs. I hope you relish the power.

Bethany Cosentino is dreamy. Whether she's looking for lost love
or hiding from it by way of marijuana, her head always seems to be
stuck in the clouds. Over the last year, Cosentino—alongside buddy
Bobb Bruno under the moniker Best Coast—has released a slew of EP's
and 7""s that capture the dreary-eyed blankness of a recluse in
love and forge a middle ground between pop culture's romanticism
and the real world's despair. The California trio's debut LP,
Crazy For You, stays the course, but in a deliberately
sunnier way that pays dividends in its directness.

One year ago, the Wisconsin football team entered the fall as a
damaged product. The team underachieved in 2008, head coach Bret
Bielema appeared to be on the hot seat, and many expected another
lackluster year. What a difference 10 wins can make.

As we resume urinating in proper, designated and morally
acceptable areas post-Mifflin and dust off our Sparknotes for the
final haul, we must all take a moment to recall what has brought us
to this point in the semester. Perhaps there is a particularly
faithful bottle of 5-Hour Energy that deserves a sincere thank you,
or perhaps it is the friend who, on that fateful night, was able to
turn your imminent shitshow into a shit-monologue by sending your
one-and-a half-glasses-of-wine drunkass off in a cab. Whatever the
case, as a community we are one academic year more learned than we
once were, and if I could give the over 40,000 UW-Madison students
the high five they deserve, I would. Unfortunately, I have
sensitive palms.

Before I delve into the details of this week's ""What's in the
Fridge,"" I have to admit the bounty of fresh ingredients employed
therein may not have actually occupied my fridge before the
filming. That said, a trip to your local grocer should prove more
than sufficient to pile a platter high with Mediterranean-style
salmon, tangy orzo pasta salad and crispy grilled asparagus.
Inspired by a handful of stereotypically Mediterranean
ingredients—balsamic vinegar, olive oil, basil and capers—I began
by drawing a zesty bath for a slab of wild Alaskan sockeye salmon.
Adhering loosely to the Mediterranean theme, the savor of fresh
basil, sweetness of dried cranberries and smokiness of toasted
almonds forged the way as they subsequently melded into a
tantalizing pasta salad. Tender asparagus—dipped in rich butter and
dusted with fragrant pepper—rounded off this trio of culinary
grandeur, dancing their way across the sizzling grill as they
enjoyed their moment in the spotlight. Pair this creation with a
chilled glass of chardonnay and, well, Opa!

Environmentalists frequently lament the lack of environmental
conscience in those whose lives they deem ""unsustainable""—""How
can they be so selfish?"" we ask. This is the battle being fought
today. A division of ""us"" vs. ""them"" occurs, and the ""others""
are frequently chastised as reckless and irresponsible. ""This is
their fault!"" it often goes. I will argue, however, that a
socially just and effective environmentalism—something the
movement's founders envisioned—is incommensurable with this
division.

For Madison cinephiles, this is the most wonderful time of the
year: The 2010 Wisconsin Film Festival (WIFF) has arrived. The
annual cinematic extravaganza will feature 192 films screened over
five days; while this monumental amount of cinema undoubtedly
contains a wealth of established masterpieces and hidden gems, it
can also be pretty daunting to try to determine what, if anything,
one should go see. Thus, it's no surprise that the question
everyone's been asking me over the last few weeks is ""What's worth
seeing?""

The Swedish music scene has long stood as a valued contributor
to pop music, from ABBA, Europe, Ace of Base and the Cardigans of
old, to the Knife, Peter Bjorn and John and Jens Lekman descendents
of today. But these acts always manage to share a flamboyant,
quirky or ethereal aesthetic. So it seems from outside the theater,
sitting on the curb, we hear the energized finger-picking and
jaunting vocals of Kristian Matsson: The Tallest Man on Earth. An
ironically monolithic moniker from someone of small stature both
literally (look up videos—he's short and lean) and sonically when
compared to the flair of the Swedish scene. Musically, however, the
title is apt.

The world of ""Fish Tank"" teems with images that should shock
audiences—children wander the road side looking for booze, money
and general mischief while the few adults that are around scream
obscenities at them, pushing them out of view to make way for their
own drunken revelry and denials of responsibility. It's clearly a
wretched place to grow up, and it's in that hell of urban waste
that we find Mia, a 15-year-old aspiring break dancer who responds
to this world with violent, obscenity-spewing rage towards her
family, peers and even strangers.

Someone once said that college is an adventure and only you hold
the map that shows the path to success. That ""someone"" was an
ex-con turned motivational speaker who completed two hours of his
court-ordered community service by speaking at my eighth grade
graduation. Despite his teardrop tattoo and missing fingers, I took
the advice of Henry ""T-Bone"" Watkins to heart; he was genuine and
emphatic and said anyone who didn't listen to his advice ""IS GONNA
GET STABBED.""
