In the past, most Wisconsin softball teams would have been unable to surmount a large lead in the closing innings of a game. However, this year’s Badgers (6-3 Big Ten, 20-12 overall) are carrying a different attitude and swagger under second year head coach Yvette Healy.

Timely hitting and a couple of good breaks put the University of Wisconsin softball team (2-1 Big Ten, 13-10 overall) on the winning side of a 2-1 split in this weekend’s Big Ten opening series against Iowa (1-2, 11-17).

In the nearly-85-degree heat of the day, we decided it was only fair to dance to some astro-pop beach rock music under some trees in a backyard at the Brooklyn Vegan showcase. Enter, Django Django, a Jestons-meets-Beach-Boys threesome that is perfect for summer jamming. Afterwards we caught Tennis, a band whose frontwoman gives female rockers a good name. Her simultaneously strong and soothing vocals are the perfect compliment to the danceable rock group at her back.

Well, it’s Valentine’s Day—yet another time of the year where
commercialism takes over our lives and television commercials shove
as many clichés down our throats as they possibly can. Hell, last
week I saw a commercial advising me to buy one of the “Twilight”
movies. I mean…really? What has this world come to?

There has been a recent uptick in the number of foreign bands I
listen to. Not because I'm anti-American music-I've got plenty of
that too-but because I've found or been introduced to some amazing
foreign musicians that I think deserve a little love.

When Newt Gingrich triumphantly challenged President Obama to seven, three-hour Lincoln-Douglas style debates in early December, the prospect appeared to coincide with his image as the intellectual Republican candidate. Yet since his impressive performances in GOP debates, the professorial Gingrich appeal has tapered significantly. His disappointing fourth-place finish in the Iowa Caucus-due, in part, to a horde of negative advertisements in the state-shattered any hopes of the utopian, debate-based primary Gingrich desired. A strong showing in Florida could give a jolt of energy to his candidacy, but with a limited war chest and reservations about his personal life, Gingrich would best avoid buying new milk.

Recording a band with sub-par equipment isn't fun. You'd think I
would remember this from that time I was in a ska band in high
school, but Friday night I decided to try my hand at it again.
Local boys Baristacide came out to The Daily Cardinal office and
set up all of their gear, helped me out by finding a controller to
run the mics through so I could get audio and played a set of
pretty awesome pop-punk-for-people-who-hate-pop-punk. After seven
songs and a few minor technical issues, we ended up with more than
enough for a good session.

Having seemingly gotten back on their feet after two consecutive

rival UW-Milwaukee (2-0 Horizon League, 8-2 overall) Tuesday

I will unashamedly admit that I have had Dec. 10 marked on my
calendar for a long time. Each day passing signified one day closer
to the Redefined Fall Semester Show at the Wisconsin Union
Theater.
