In a thrilling and hard-fought Big Ten battle, No. 5 Wisconsin (0-1 Big Ten, 9-1 overall) was pushed to the limit in its conference opener at the Field House Friday night, taking on a Michigan State team (1-0 Big Ten, 8-2) that refused to be overwhelmed by an elite school seeking to defend its home floor. Determined to hold their own, the Spartans hung with the Badgers serve for serve and rally after rally, unrelenting in the pursuit of an upset.
Entering last season, there was a lot of uncertainty surrounding Wisconsin. The Badgers had just come off a dismal 2015-’16 campaign (8-19-8 overall, 3-13-4 Big Ten ), finishing last in the Big Ten in one of their worst seasons in program history. Still, there was still optimism for the team surrounding a few elite players, and, more importantly, a new coaching staff led by a Badger product in head coach Tony Granato.
Two years ago, when Netflix released its true crime docuseries “Making a Murderer,” it seemed like that was the only thing people talked about. They debated over the innocence of Steven Avery, they fawned over modern-day superheroes Dean Strang and Jerry Buting. The Buzzfeed articles constantly filled everyone’s Facebook timeline. People were obsessed with this idea of a wrongful conviction. And though there was a divide amongst viewers over Avery’s innocence, everyone agreed on the innocence of Avery’s nephew, Brendan Dassey. In the series, we watched as police officers interrogated him for hours on end, feeding him stories, telling him what they wanted to hear until he finally gave them what they wanted: a confession.
Early Wednesday morning, Madison resident Holden W. Magroin was released from Dane County Sheriff’s Department after being arrested on Regent Street the previous night and charged with public intoxication as well as public urination. A source who wishes to remain anonymous reports that during an allegedly “painfully silent” car ride home with his wife, Magroin announced that he would be going to court to fight the charges. The source went on the disclose that when pressed on how he would oppose the charge, the accused urinator replied “Umm ... see, the thing is … well, where was I? It was self-defense!” The source stated the opinion that this seemed to be made up on the spot and postulated that it may have originated with Magroin’s love of national news stories. Cardinal reporters caught up with Magroin later in the week to uncover more on the story. He was quoted saying: “Here’s the thing: Was I drunk? That’s for the court to decide. I really had no choice on the matter. I was walking completely normally down an alley on the way home from the pub—I mean ... church!—when this stop sign started leaning towards me. I didn’t feel safe, so I took the only action I could to protect myself.” When asked for more details, Magroin simply stated that he had been in church Tuesday night from 8-11:30 with his friend Dave. Dave could not be reached for comment.When asked for a comment on the story, arresting officer Charlie McCop stated that he had observed Magroin stumble out of a bar, named Whiskey’s Church, start shouting wildly about how dark it was and then proceeded to urinate on a stop sign. At this point, McCop felt that he “had no choice but to arrest the clearly inebriated man.”At press time, McCop was apprehending a different man urinating on the same stop sign

Last Friday, UW-Madison’s student-run fashion publication, Moda Magazine, put on a fashion show featuring local retailers and student designers. The fashion show partnered with the Textiles & Fashion Design program of the UW-Madison School of Human Ecology. It was also the finale event of UW Fashion Week, which included two other events put on by Moda, Cocktails and Couture and Swap N’ Shop. All three events gave students the chance to mingle with friends, meet designers and wear cocktail dresses that’ve been sitting in closets for years.

We’re just over halfway through the music portion of live-music heaven that is SXSW, and the talent here has been so consistent, none of the Daily Cardinal arts desk has slept in days. This is an exaggeration, but not as far off as you might think.
If you go on Google and search “gold music band,” you’ll find bands called GOLD, Gold, Band of Gold and several others if you scroll through the first couple pages. That’s why the Milwaukee-based band GGOOLLDD doubled every letter and made it all-caps. It’s their way to distinguish themselves from the get-go, but this band is much more than an attempt to stand out from the crowd so they can get big.
