The University of Wisconsin-Madison Interfraternity Council organized “Mend Mendota” — a cleanup event on Lake Mendota Monday afternoon — after trash left on the ice from weekend gatherings garnered social media attention. Members of eight IFC chapters and one Panhellenic Association sorority gathered on the melting ice to pick up trash left behind after parties over the weekend.

On Jan. 6, 2021, insurrectionists stormed the United States Capitol in Washington D.C., as Donald Trump’s loss to President-elect Joe Biden was being finalized through the certification of each state’s electoral college votes. The domestic terrorists smashed windows, stole and even killed as lawmakers hung onto their lives precariously until the originally tame response to the rioters shifted to something more assertive. There were white supremacists dressed in vile “camp Auschwitz” garb and carrying Confederate flags. Indeed, this was the first time the flag had breached into the Capitol in the context of insurrection — having previously only been in the Capitol as part of Mississippi’s old state flag that was replaced by a new one in November. Such a feat had not been accomplished even during the Civil War.

152 years ago, six women walked out of the University of Wisconsin-Madison with bachelor degrees gripped in their hands and pride etched on their faces. Their graduation marked the first time for females to earn their degrees from the institution.

On February 11, Netflix released a four-episode documentary about the mystery case of Elisa Lam. In early 2013, Lam was reported missing after staying at the infamous Cecil Hotel located in Los Angeles. The documentary follows this crime through the perspectives of the hotel manager at the time, the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD), hotel guests and the “internet sleuths". Through multiple views, viewers are walked through one of the most bewildering and puzzling crime scenes of the decade.

Walking the Lakeshore Path after nightfall is not for the faint of heart. Not only does the trail suffer from non-existent lighting, aside from the streaks of moonlight through the trees, but it lacks access points for police or escape routes for walkers. This renders the path unusable at night — except for those walking in groups, keys clenched between their knuckles with their phones out and ready to call 911.
