Chazwick Bundick’s name fits his look. His appearance and lifestyle embody almost every stereotype of the, dare I say, stereotypical American hipster. Bundick is usually pictured with thick-rimmed glasses while sporting a lackadaisical look in his eyes. It all screams arrogance. But the man behind the moniker, Toro y Moi, single-handedly brought the chillwave genre to relevance. Perhaps his image is justifiable.

LOS ANGELES—Saturday morning, Stanford and Wisconsin players and coaches participated in the Rose Bowl’s media day, giving reporters access to everybody on both rosters. Here are some quick bits and pieces from both teams. Wisconsin’s practice and media availability scheduled for this afternoon has been cancelled, likely because it has rained all morning here. Look for more Daily Cardinal coverage this evening and leading up to kickoff Tuesday afternoon.

Growing up on the works of Shel Silverstein, I quickly developed an affinity for rhyme schemes and wordplay. This preadolescent experience with language games later evolved into a deeper adoration of the English language when, as a 9-year-old, I received my first rap album, The Marshall Mathers LP. I am now a hip-hop head, and proud of it.

There are certain events in this world that make sports seem very insignificant. The actions taken by Jovan Belcher this past weekend fall into that category.

About a decade ago, the almighty National Football League looked like it was headed down a dangerous path. It was turning into a battle of big hits. An exaggeration, yes, but not far from where the league was going. ESPN used to throw together highlight reels of players head hunting, launching their 250-pound bodies at each other with the intent to knock guys out of the game. It is rare to see a sport with a main purpose of hurting the other team, but the NFL was certainly flirting with this notion.

On its opening day, “Halo 4” earned $220 million globally, making it easy to see why gamers recognize Halo as one of the most beloved franchises in video game history. When the previous developers, Bungie, announced they would no longer be working with “Halo,” it left many fans of the franchise concerned for furture installations. Bungie ended its run with the franchise on “Halo Reach” and passed the torch to 343 Industries, effectively entrusting these new developers with Microsoft’s most valuable franchise. Not only did 343 bring new life to the series but they did it without spoiling the saga Bungie had already left behind.

Between Midnight Madness, the preseason poll and the first official practice, one could argue a few different dates signify the start of the college hoops season. However, this Friday the actual, count-toward-your-record games begin.

When I heard thousands of runners turned out Sunday morning in Central Park despite the cancellation of the New York City Marathon, I could not have been more proud of the sporting community.

Hurricane Sandy slammed into the East Coast earlier this week, bringing with it massive power outages, transportation problems, billions of dollars in damage and even death. But beyond the material damage, the “super storm” has also brought to national attention funding issues for the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

I figure that, with the election coming up in the next week or so, I’d best input my final two cents about the political system. I’m becoming increasingly disturbed by what I see going on in the conservative spectrum of our national discourse. There’s been quite a bit of outrage over some comments made recently by one Richard Mourdock involving rape, which is only another grain of salt in a wound opened up by Todd Akin’s now-infamous “legitimate rape” statement made while defending pro-life positions. So I say to all self-respecting Americans: hasn’t this gone on long enough? Aren’t we sick of our elected representatives spewing pseudoscience as if they were some kind of political medium? The time to end this anti-intellectualism has come, and unless it does end, Americans are going to suffer because of it.

It is a bit embarrassing, but I first discovered that I could ride a two-wheel bicycle when I was in sixth grade. My deficiencies in that realm did not stem from ineptitude with the handle bars, but rather from my unwillingness to try new things. “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” rang loudly in my ears. And since none of my arms and legs were broken as a result of bike riding, why fix this void in my life?

Let’s face it: college students are obsessed with coffee. We have been programmed to function on little sleep, constantly either studying or partying. As the expression goes: work hard, play hard. We wake up, needing coffee to start our day and little caffeine boost throughout the day to stay awake during our classes.

It’s 2012. Technology has expanded to the point where there are innovations in nearly every facet of our lives to make things easier and more convenient. We have voice-controlled phones. We have watches that can monitor our health levels. We put a freaking rover on Mars. So why can’t we have instant replay in baseball?
