There are an insane number of musical genres. Like, there are way too many for anyone to even try to keep track of. And I’m not just talking about big genres—rock, rap, country (and western), jazz—the ones where you can just lump any group or artist that sounds a certain way. Each of these broad categories has an absurd multitude of offshoots (post-punk, west coast gypsy jazz, anyone?).

After having a disturbing number of conversations in which people informed me that their favorite director is Christopher Nolan, it occurred to me that there’s a long, long list of directors that most people aren’t, but everyone should be, familiar with.

Sitting in the waiting room of the Veterinary Medicine Teaching Hospital, it is easy to see the care and attention that is paid to the patients at this facility. Even with the excited barking of dogs, insistent shushing of the owners and general chaos of the clinic, all the employees seem genuinely happy to help owners as they come in to pick up medication or bring a pet in for an appointment. It is this love for animals and sense of value for a pet’s life that make veterinary clinics like this necessary, and animal blood banks all the more crucial.

As my girlfriend has so kindly reminded me, it’s almost Valentine’s Day. Or is. Or was. It’s around here somewhere is the point.

Yesterday, I ran a column that investigated the influences of the Internet on the music business. In a nutshell, I said that the Internet has interacted with how we consume music in ways that aren’t necessarily obvious. Unknown artists are now more than ever able to become mega-stars with the ever-growing prevalence of viral videos. And because of the Internet, it’s unclear if music consumers or producers play a more significant role in deciding what rises to the top of the relevance scale.

An impending investigation pertaining to the legality of drone strikes by Ben Emmerson, the U.N. special rapporteur on human rights and counterterrorism, offers a vital opportunity to reflect upon the morality and efficacy of a technology that has become a hallmark of President Barack Obama's foreign policy. The expansion and entrenchment of this capability as a central component of U.S. military power under Obama's tenure has received far too little discussion, especially in light of disturbing findings regarding the extent of civilian casualties and psychological trauma resulting from this targeted killing program.

For the last couple years, “indie” artists scrambling to make it onto the floor mix at Urban Outfitters have been playing the “Reinterpret the Theme Song to ‘Welcome Back Kotter’” game. The late 2000s saw fearless weirdoes Ariel Pink, Daniel Lopatin, James Ferraro and Destroyer toying with pastiche, neutered sounds of the late ’70s and early ’80s. They blended the white-collar, scotch-buzzed saxrotica of Steely Dan and the late-night, cocaine-buzzed yacht rock of Fleetwood Mac with a perverse dosage of cheesy, new-wave synth and the musty scent of your dad’s stale cologne. Sounds that had been deader than dead for the last thirty years suddenly became fair game. Of all the artists that have leapt to the AOR crusade, Ducktails comes as one of the most surprising.

Don’t you hate when writers or columnists will, like, take advantage of a conveniently placed holiday or celebration in order to get an easy column written? Like, say, if a film columnist were to write about scary movies close to Halloween? Isn’t that the worst?

Let’s play a game. I want you to invent a word for a genre that doesn’t exist until you create it and use it for generalizing music that has yet to be categorized in a way that makes one feel safe. It can only be one word and takes two steps to effectively create: the first part of the word must be an adjective, preferably abstract or otherwise absent from basic conversation, and the second part must end in either “wave,” “core,” “step,” “hop” or “trap” (for the relevant hipsters out there). If you’re feeling innovative, add “post” to the beginning for extra historical value. How many can you conjure from the recesses of your socialized mind?

Lance Armstrong, seven-time Tour de France winner, cancer survivor and hero to many, is now inching closer and closer to being perceived as a performance-enhancing drug user in the court of public opinion. The worst part is that this transgression did not take me by surprise.

This week, after yet another ratings battle with the Motion Picture Association of America, Harvey Weinstein finally had enough. In 2010 Weinstein was able to convince the MPAA to overturn its NC-17 rating for the Ryan Gosling/Michelle Williams relationship drama “Blue Valentine” when the ratings board got up in arms over a scene of Gosling performing oral sex. This year the board would not budge on its decision to brand the documentary “Bully” with a cursed “R” rating for “some language,” deflating the hopes of many that the documentary could be a rallying point for raising awareness of the horrors of relentless adolescent harassment among kids themselves. One teenage bullying victim even started a petition for a PG-13 rating on Change.org which has already racked up almost half a million signatures.

Ah, summer. In the midst of our lackluster winter, it is
probably normal to be languishing. But for those of you missing hot
sun, warm breezes, inviting beaches and the Frankie Avalon-style
escapades they entail, stop dreaming: Tennis is coming to town.
Though this band hails from the frosty heights of Denver, Tennis
brings a little slice of summer wherever they go with their surf
and ‘50s rock-n-roll-centered sound.

Quite paradoxically, Leonard Cohen is an ageless performer. With
a voice that has run from slight weariness to a decrepit husk, he
has followed his own path creatively. He was a poet and novelist
before he turned singer-songwriter, and his songs are peppered with
literary motifs and turns of phrase.

2011 will forever go down as one of the best years in gaming
history. Fantastic titles such as "Arkham City," "Skyrim" and
"Portal 2" all brought amazing experiences into gamers' lives, but
that's no reason to scoff at the promising lineup coming in 2012.
Here are my ten most anticipated titles of the year:

I know talking about schools bores most people in Wisconsin, but
something interesting has been overlooked for the past few weeks.
State Rep. Mark Radcliffe, D-River Falls, has introduced a bill in
the Wisconsin state Legislature giving high school students the
option of skipping traditional academic classes in favor of
vocational ones.

On Sept. 13, Atmosphere's show at the Orpheum will be

Even if you feel like you keep seeing the same mediocre genre
movies repackaged with just a different façade, year after year, a
few American studios have some surprises in store that promise to
change that storyline. A trend has begun among big studios to begin
producing so-called ""microbudget"" films that they would have
otherwise left to the tiny indie studios to produce. This isn't
just the well-established genre of American independent films, but
a whole new genre of even ""indie-er"" flicks.
