Drake is currently walking a dangerous, thin line between the world’s most popular rapper and the Internet’s biggest meme. The side he plans to fall on could change the face of popular music for better or for worse.

Canadian based folk-rocker Dallas Green—also known as City and Colour—attempts to reach new depths on his fifth release, If I Should Go Before You. He introduces themes of mortality—a common theme for singer-songwriters—to his folk-fuzz-inspired sound. In order to distinguish himself from inadvertently exploring the same tropes as other artists within the genre, Green attempts to contextualize his fears of mortality within a relationship, hence the title of the album.

How do you know you’re awake right now? How can you be sure? Sure, you think you’re awake. You feel fully conscious and aware. You can see your surroundings. You can move and think and all of your sensory receptors feel active and operational. There are multiple states of being where one can experience all of the thoughts described above and one of them is the state of sleep.

This weekend marks the release of “Super Mario Maker,” Nintendo’s celebration of the 30th anniversary of its long-running franchise. The game is primarily a level editor, using accessible yet powerful tools so that anyone from our mothers to expert game designers could design the Mario levels of their dreams. The game pulls in ideas, characters, enemies, obstacles and platforms from four Mario side-scrolling releases, meaning those who “grew up with a different game” will likely see themselves represented in the tools.

If you take a look at Wavves’s song titles and lyrics, you’d think they were a moping emo band 10 years late to the party. But while their lyrics are dark and desperate, their music is anything but. In fact, they make the party. The So-Cal surf-rock band, formed originally as a solo project by frontman Nathan Williams, finds ways to make people happily sing along to lyrics like “Misery, will you comfort me?” and “We’ll all die alone, just the way we live.” With whining verses and catchy, head-banging hooks, Wavves turn their sad songs into party anthems, and they’re taking their music on tour for the first time in years to support their upcoming album, V.

Wisconsin’s blowout loss to Alabama Saturday was nothing like its opening-night debacle against LSU a year ago. Save for a brief period in the second quarter, when it looked like the Badgers could keep up with the Crimson Tide after tying the game at seven, UW never showed it had the ability to beat the No. 3 team in the nation. The Badgers never led, they were bested in every offensive category and were clearly outclassed both physically and from a coaching standpoint.

A recent email from the Office of the Registrar reminded me of the daunting task of registering for classes. In the upcoming weeks, many UW-Madison students will begin to enroll in classes for the Fall 2015 term.

An online course about an Aldo Leopold-type approach to sustainable hunting enrolled thousands of students, spurred fervent discussions in online forums and drew over 80 participants to an exposition that included a deer skinning demonstration and pheasant hunt. Though by many counts it was successful, the future of courses like it is uncertain in the face of university resource strains.

Last Thursday and Friday, the Majestic hosted another one of their legendary two-night runs. This time around, the weekend featured The Floozies, following up on the groovy electro-instrumental vibes that performed so well last September when Cherub rocked similar back-to-back shows. In typical Majestic style, the proper social media channels were abuzz for months leading up to the shows, playing into the wave of hype that led both nights to sell out. For everyone who had the sense to grab tickets to both nights before they sold out, that anticipation skyrocketed when The Floozies announced that they'd be playing two unique sets: not a single song would be repeated.

Days after The Wisconsin State Journal reported Gov. Scott Walker was considering autonomy measures for the UW System, neither state Republicans nor System officials have confirmed or denied whether that includes splitting UW-Madison from the rest of the System.

Halloween has now come and gone and with it have gone the smattering of Halloween-related sitcom episodes that have graced both network and cable alike. Soon, Thanksgiving and Christmas episodes will usher us into the most wonderful time of the year. As such, I figured I would take this opportunity to break down the trope that is the “Holiday Episode.”

Rick and Morty” is a new and popular show from Adult Swim that real cartoon and science fans should view. The Internet Movie Database (IMDb) has already rated it a 9.2 and ranked it as the 11th- best TV show of all time, putting it in the company of “Breaking Bad” and “The Sopranos.” All this success has come after only one season, which aired its pilot in December 2013.

On the issues section of her website, Mary Burke uses the phrase collective bargaining, or some version of it, twice, and both of those fall inside the same paragraph. Does this seem weird to anybody? Shouldn’t the Democratic candidate who is running against, arguably, one of the country’s least union-friendly governors be making this a bigger deal. Since her victory in the primary, I’ve been waiting for Burke to become more salient on this topic, but so far that hasn’t happened. It’s like I’m pretty sure that I’m at my surprise birthday party, but I’ve been here for 45 minutes and no one has said surprise yet, or even happy birthday. So, either this is an incredibly long pause for effect, or all of my friends forgot about my birthday. In other words, I think Mary Burke forgot about my birthday.

I have recently noticed a trend concerning the content of my Facebook Newsfeed. It seems that one of the most recent videos to go viral is, ironically, a video concerning our generation’s overuse of our cellphones and social media as a whole, titled “Can We Auto-Correct Humanity?”.

Last month, Porter Robinson’s Worlds helped popular electronic music to take a step in the right direction, encouraging a shift in focus from the loud, formulated nature of big room dance music to an emphasis on meaningful and emotional songwriting. When he began writing Worlds, Robinson may not have always had ambitions of grandeur, but it was clear that he was on to something special. “All along, I knew I was going to write something deeply personal,” Robinson told me, regarding his songwriting process. However, the culmination of Robinson’s vision extends far beyond the album itself. Last Saturday, the Orpheum Theater was home to the Worlds Tour, a monumental production that brought the album to life more vividly and cohesively than I could have ever expected. “I definitely wanted it to feel like the most beautiful version of the music,” Robinson told me. “It was such a high-octane effort to try to get the show right aesthetically.”

Welcome back, everyone, to my little music column: my way of ranting about whatever vaguely music related topic that comes to mind. It also serves as a way of getting to see my picture in the paper every Tuesday, so that’s always good too.
