Eclectic Japanese alt-rock band CHAI and Brighton-based rock quintet The Heavy Heavy are performing at the Memorial Union Terrace on Oct. 7 and 8, respectively. CHAI will be opened by Madison funk-pop duo JENNY 123; The Heavy Heavy will be opened by Minneapolis indie and punk rock group Creeping Charlie. Hosted by the Wisconsin Union Directorate (WUD) Music, the free performances will feature these distinct, memorable artists who each provoke and electrify.

As geopolitical tensions escalate in Eastern Europe, many point to Russia — the main aggressor in Ukraine — and the United States, the historic protector and patron of Europe in the post-WWII era, as the actors most likely to benefit from the conflict. Since the 2014 invasion of Crimea, the West has engaged in numerous discussions surrounding Russia’s imperial ambitions in former Soviet satellite states, where many view the Russian invasion of Ukraine as a challenge to U.S. hegemony in the region.

As Dane County’s mask mandate expired earlier this month, University of Wisconsin-Madison students are now faced with the expiration of the university-wide mandate on the first day of spring break, March 12. Some praised the removal of the mask mandate, while others were less optimistic about the future without masks.

Of the many events to come from 2020, perhaps one of the more positive was a renewed set of dietary guidelines for Americans. In a nation riddled with chronic disease, informing the public about what to eat could be crucial in battling obesity and related health issues. The guidelines included information designed to combat our nation’s growing health problems, but many believe it failed to do what was necessary to help a large part of the U.S. population.

Last year, a UW-Madison pre-college program participant filed a federal lawsuit against the university for its response to sexual assault allegations among summer program members. That lawsuit was dismissed this summer, according to court records and new reporting by the Wisconsin State Journal.
