In many ways, this Halloween looks to be the last straw.
Comments from city officials ranged from perturbed to infuriated
and Mayor Dave Cieslewicz in particular had the harshest words,
saying, \I have had enough. This must come to an end."" Although we
are disturbed by the vagueness of his sentiment, we agree with it
in principle. Because people cannot seem to act in a sane manner,
the Madison police department is entirely justified in using
draconian measures to deter future Halloween incidents. However,
city officials should hesitate to make rash policy decisions when
emotions are running high. The backlash might rival the behavior
they are trying to stamp out.

An involving, worthwhile film about high-class snobbery is as
evasive as an objective Michael Moore speech. It is a subject that
is inherently tedious, and even though there has never been a
thoroughly captivating movie made about it (and Robert Altman's
grotesquely over-praised \Gosford Park"" does not count), a handful
of these dreary flicks are churned out each year. The irrelevant,
unwanted comedy of manners of 2004 happens to be actor Stephan
Fry's directorial debut ""Bright Young Things,"" an energetic but
unquestionably dull adaptation of Evelyn Waugh's novel of the same
name.

OK, we know you know which bars in Madison are best for certain
special occasions. If it's a birthday, you're heading to The Nitty
Gritty. Huge Badger game? State Street Brats. Desperate to smoke a
hookah? The Casbah is calling your name. But where do you go when
you just wanna go?

I just recently purchased some tickets online for a Bucks' game.
The purchase was followed by a phone call indicating my debit card
was invalid. This phone call then led to an hour of shocking
conversation between my bank and their fraud prevention service who
politely informed me I had been the victim of identity
fraud.

Most Americans know practically nothing about one of the three
most important institutions in their country, the Supreme Court.
Most are at least vaguely aware of the president and Congress. If
nothing else, they know that every couple of years these folks
flood their TV screens with ads telling all about how their
opponents are depraved, stupid, fiscally inept or, in John Kerry's
case, less heroic than his stack of medals suggests.

Variety is, as the saying goes, the spice of life. With that in
mind, in lieu of the traditional one-major-idea column most often
seen in these pages, I now pose three questions, vaguely related in
that they rolled through my head as I tracked the sports world this
weekend. The cynical readers will surely say, \He's just copping
out of writing anything full-length."" I prefer to think of it as a
special feature, something for the readers with short attention
spans.

It is a fact that college students like pizza. This I say with
complete and utter confidence. College students like pizza similar
to the way rabbits like cabbage: Sure, sometimes there is a strange
one who will pass over the treat, but the other rabbits will just
stare at the non-partaker for a little while before going back to
happily munching on Old Man Johnson's prized front-yard
crop.

An early scene in \Vanity Fair"" has Becky Sharp (Reese
Witherspoon) trying to impress a possible suitor, a wealthy soldier
stationed in India, by declaring that she adores everything about
the country. She takes a bite of spicy curry as proof, her eyes
water and she conceals a grimace. She turns smilingly towards the
suitor and flirtatiously tells him she loves the curry, as a single
tear falls down her cheek.

If you stand very close to me, you might notice a small scar in
front of my right ear. The scar is from surgery I underwent when I
was seven. After a long series of tests, a mysterious bump turned
out to be nothing serious, and a short procedure was required to
remove it. Ever since, there have been no after-effects other than
the scar.

At the risk of beating a dead horse, America needs to revisit
the shock and moral outrage that swirled around the Super Bowl
halftime show in January. I do not remember which teams played or
which team finally won, but I (and everyone else who has even
minimal contact with the media in the western world) knew that
Janet Jackson's breast was exposed during a \wardrobe

class-action lawsuits and, most importantly, proposed federal
legislation to raise penalties on indecency and obscenity.

Guitarist/vocalist Kyp Malone of the hot new band TV on the
Radio doesn't seem frazzled, even with a recently released
critically acclaimed album and an upcoming tour. His voice remains
so mellow it is almost inaudible. Perhaps he wants to save his
falsettos for the relentless upcoming tour schedule, which spans
the U.S. and Europe.
