Tracing the history of the Onion from a \wacky campus rag"" to a national phenomenon that has spawned numerous books and a movie script, former Onion Editor in Chief Robert Siegel shared his favorite headlines with a small but enthusiastic crowd Monday. Siegel spoke as part of the Distinguished Lecture Series in the Wisconsin Union Theater.
It is a mark of bravery, if not recklessness, for Michael Radford to bring Shakespeare's \The Merchant of Venice"" to the contemporary screen. Not only is the play's pivotal character, the infamous Shylock, infused with vicious anti-Semitism, the play's other tensions between romantic comedy and revenge drama, love and loyalty, justice and mercy, threaten to overwhelm its 138 minutes. Despite these obstacles, the film succeeds by embracing, rather than ignoring, these challenging inconsistencies.
Each year, a slew of new artists storm the Bilboard charts, but many seem to serve as placeholders for the same archetypes: the edgy mall-punk diva, the helium-voiced pop-punk band, the bad boy R&B pinup, and the vaguely grungy Christian rock band.
Allow your academic focus to slacken as I pass on to you the tale of my quest to find Sen. Russ Feingold. Contrary to your initial reactions, I did not spend my spring break looking for Feingold in his offices in Washington, D.C., Milwaukee or Madison. My search for the junior senator from Wisconsin led me to the whimsical place where seekers of souls converge--the Denver airport.
\What's your major?""
It is hard to imagine a more pressure-filled situation than crafting a debut album-except that of Nate Johnson, whose album is also the first offering from Two Cities Media, a Racine-based label created by Johnson and collaborator Travis Gaastra. How To (Make a Pop Album In Ten Days) is an admirable acoustic pop effort in the face of that challenge.
All things considered, \Man of the House"" could have been worse. What started off as a bloodbath with Tommy Lee Jones donning a cowboy hat and police badge to shoot at some guy lighting things on fire evolved into an unmoving plot about how a bunch of hot cheerleaders saw some guy shoot some other guy and now someone's trying to kill them.
Various broadcasters are expected to bring a lawsuit against the Federal Communications Commission sometime within the next month, citing the FCC's failure to define standards for indecency violations.
Judging from initial sales, it appears that former slugger Jose Canseco's new book about the use of anabolic steroids in baseball is juicy enough (pun intended) to give the author the financial boost he needs. Finance, of course, is the undercurrent to the entire steroid issue.
\Golly, Sandra, you've grown up really crazy"" Eisley lead singer Stacy DuPree sings midway through Room Noises, Eisley's major label debut, and the sentiment certainly applies to the band members as well.
The annual Polar Plunge makes its way to Madison's Lake Monona Saturday. The cold-water dive raises money for Special Olympics and also lets participants face their fears and test their limits in a challenging-but eminently harmless-environment.

You are getting sleepy ... very sleepy ... your eyelids are getting heavy ... when I snap my fingers, you will be completely asleep.
Last week, Gov. Jim Doyle quietly unleashed the state of Wisconsin's newest beast of a tourism slogan, \Wisconsin-Life's So Good,"" along with a $3.8 million increase to the state's tourism budget. Why this hasn't been the subject of an opening monologue on Letterman, Conan or the Daily Show is beyond me, but I hope the advertising wizard who came up with this one has tendered his or her resignation.
If you purchased certain DVDs from the Metro Goldwyn Mayer company between 1998 and 2003, you might be entitled to a free replacement or cash settlement. At least that is what's in store if a newly proposed class action lawsuit is approved May 16 this year. But before deciding to take part in this suit, it's important to sift through what is rumor and what is fact, and when all is said and done, it becomes clear that MGM has committed no wrongdoing.
The 24 Hours of Telemark is America's only 24 Hour Cross Country Team Relay Race. Skiers from all over the country form up to six-member freestyle teams and take turns skiing an approximate 10-kilometer loop for a continuous 24-hour period. There are 19 categories for all abilities. The UW Nordic Ski club entered three teams in the race-the \J-Team,"" ""Enduro Burger"" and the ""Skinoritas."" UW-Madison sophomore and Enduro Burger member, Seth Bichler, recalls his experience.
Badger fans better hope the country-and the competition-continue to chalk UW's perfect record up to its defense. That way the offense can keep a low profile while offensive coordinator Brian White weaves spread formations into a ball-control offense and goes so deep into the playbook that he breaks the bindings.
Though most Americans support equal rights for homosexuals, 60 percent also oppose same-sex marriage. There are no good reasons to ban same-sex marriage. Arguments in favor of such a ban rest on either false premises or simple prejudice. On the contrary, there are several good reasons to support gay marriage, the most basic of which are simple equality and the practical value of martial union.
