Today, the uniform says everything about a team's identity. But
in every sport, there are teams with fashion blunders that doom
them before they even step onto the court, rink or field. As I
closely examine the most extreme offenders, remember the old adage:
'It's not whether you win or lose, it's how you look doing
it.'

At first, Melissa (identifying details, including her name, have
been changed in light of ongoing litigation) and her five roommates
thought the letter was a bad joke. The vague legal document in
front of them stated that their Internet Service Provider was being
subpoenaed and all the Internet usage records on their computers
were subject to seizure and review. Upon calling their ISP, the
UW-Madison students learned the very unfunny reality of their
situation: They had just been sued by the Recording Industry
Association of America, the legal trade group representing 90
percent of the U.S. recording industry.

After a surprising 9-3 regular season to send out Barry Alvarez
on a successful note, the Badgers acquired an invitation to the
Capital One Bowl, one of the best non-BCS bowls. The joy may have
waned a little when they discovered that their opponent would be
No. 7 Auburn (9-2), one of the more underrated teams in the nation,
but Alvarez remained unfazed.

In writing and passing amendments banning same-sex marriage,
socially-conservative politicians across the country have relied
heavily on the religious convictions of their constituencies for
support. These convictions have won in all of the states amendments
have been introduced'leading to 19 amended constitutions.

Pel'meni, the unique hole-in-the-wall Russian dumpling
restaurant, may be forced to prematurely close its doors. But this
Madison and student favorite is not the stereotypical small
business victim. There is not some bigger, corporate mass-produced
dumpling house driving them out with lower prices and better hours.
Instead, as reported yesterday in The Daily Cardinal, Pel'meni is
the victim of a strange legal strongarm tactic, and will likely
result in, either a whole shutdown of the restaurant or a change in
management. If the latter becomes the case, this editorial board
must insist anyone who currently enjoys the delicious dumplings
boycott the restaurant.

Freedom of choice and the right to privacy are two of the most
fundamental principles in our country. Why, then, is a Wisconsin
State Representative trying to restrict both of these key
constitutional rights for UW women? The Republican-controlled
Assembly passed legislation this summer introduced by Rep. Daniel
LeMahieu, R-Oostburg, that would prohibit University Health
Services from dispensing the morning after pill to students. While
LeMahieu claims the bill promotes responsible choices, this
gratuitous, offensive and otherwise unconstitutional legislation is
nothing more than a malicious attack on the reproductive rights of
women across campus.

UW-Madison's Student Judiciary failed the student body by not
informing a student organization that their attempted activism was
unconstitutional.

Experts have speculated that the barrier between fiction and
perceived reality has been on the decline for some time, citing
largely the influence of David Lynch, Boohbah and
Psilocybin.

U.S. Rep. Tom DeLay, R-Texas, is one of the few in Washington
whose malevolent stink hangs like a dark cloud over this otherwise
moderately wicked institution.

Afilmmaker with completely unrestricted creative freedom is
almost nonexistent. In order to achieve that powerful status, you
need to have created and/or directed a multibillion dollar
franchise. George Lucas and Steven Spielberg skyrocketed to the
upper echelon of the industry not only because their films are
usually gigantic hits, but because the projects they pick are safe.
Whereas Lucas has ridden the 'Star Wars' phenomenon and since 1977,
Spielberg mostly chooses event films headlined by a huge
celebrity.

Long before the University of Maryland's basketball program
featured the patented checkered trim on the jerseys and clung to
the \Fear the Turtle!"" battlecry, the Terps were known for one
man??-Lefty. While an adoption of the state flag graces the uniform
and the fans run with the ironic-by-design call to arms, long-time
head coach Lefty Dresiell remains the chief symbol of Terrapin
basketball.

Take a random survey of your friends here at UW-Madison and it
is likely that you will run into a few of them who have not seen a
dentist in two or three years and yet are at least vaguely aware
that they might have cavities or other significant dental health
problems. As Malcolm Gladwell pointed out in the New Yorker last
month, \The Moral Hazard Myth,"" poor people have much the same
problem, as they sometimes cannot afford to pay for the seeming
""luxury"" of healthy teeth.

The revelation that Madison has the fourth-highest physician
prices of all U.S. metropolitan areas is a disheartening blow to
those who believe quality health care is a right for all, not a
privilege of the wealthy. Health care has been pushed to the back
burner in the face of war, an energy crisis and hurricane
devastation, but the Government Accountability Office report should
be a jarring realization to all levels of government that
priorities need to expand.

The UW System Board of Regents voted Friday to change its
employment policies to address criticisms regarding backup jobs and
felons, but some state legislators remained skeptical of the
proposed changes.

When Mattel Inc. introduced Barbie in 1959, this infamous blonde
had only one objective-to look good. Yet, Barbie gradually moved
from a passive object to an active representative of female
advancement, now claiming over 80 professions and 45 nationalities.

The glut of popular late '90s alt-metal groups lacked
characteristics defining one group from another, but Cold's
major-label releases, 13 Ways to Die Onstage and Year of the
Spider, showed some glimmers of talent and potential. At certain
points on Spider, it was reasonable to hope Cold might break away
from the alt-metal pack. Lead singer Scooter Ward managed to sell
some of the clich?? angst in his vocals, the lyrics occasionally
flashed with promise and there were a few hooks worth hearing.

Madison residents will have to wait at least one more year to
see if they can legally eat a granola bar or an after-work bag of
chips on Madison Metro buses.

As the approaching fall summons students back to Madison, many
of us prepare to say goodbye to one set of friends and hello to
another. Over the summer, we experience the familiar scene of
catching up with our high school pals, exchanging stories of our
collegiate capers and learning who got married, pregnant and who
still works at Wal-Mart. But the rendezvous is never complete.
Friends are always missing, often reflecting the absence of those
high school buds who are serving America in a foreign land.
