In 2012, presidential candidates are expected raise and spend
approximately eight billion dollars in campaign contributions, an
increase of 20 percent from the 2008 election.President Barack
Obama alone is expected to raise about one billion dollars for his
campaign, and don’t expect that money to come from teaching unions
or the ACLU; despite Obama’s promise of liberal change, his 2008
campaign accepted more money from the financial sector than anyone
in history.

Rihanna is the universal pop star. She lives in the upper
echelon of fame, that mostly vacated space once occupied by
untouchable stars like Elton John and Jimmy Page. The old icons
were backed by wheelbarrows of LP and concert ticket dough and were
not necessarily expected to engage with masses such as human
beings. Before the turn of the century, there were a ton of
arena-packing musicians who must have seemed like Norse gods or
aliens from the back rows.

The Daily Cardinal Editorial Board recently met with ASM members
to discuss their upcoming internal budget, especially the request
for $100,000 to fund a series of internal training sessions-we were
not impressed.

Are there any genuine men out there? I’ve had female friends
complain that all men are manipulative creatures who always have
some type of hidden agenda, and I have found myself constantly
coming to the defense of the male species. No longer will I do
this. For now, I agree. Never trust a man with a smile and never
give his small talk the time of day.

I have a confession. Monday night, I bought a pack of
cigarettes. I decided that lighting up was a worthwhile concession
to make to my Id. What I mean to say is that I felt overwhelmed and
decided smoking tobacco was an okay way to deal with it. This is an
analysis I stand by, considering my behavior in the past two
Octobers.

I remember the old posters that used to hang in movie theater
lobbies explaining the Motion Picture Association of America
ratings system to patrons-a vertical ladder of movie ratings G
through NC-17 accompanied by cartoon renditions of the appropriate
audiences for each.

Over the summer, I worked at the Hilton hotel in Minneapolis
performing mindless tasks under mindful eyes.

Students voiced their concerns Tuesday at a forum hosted by the
Offices of the Dean of Students with proposed changes to state laws
addressing student conduct.

When R.E.M. broke up last week, I didn't feel the
loss. When the White Stripes called it quits, sure. When Sony
announced it was firing Sam Raimi and rebooting the
Spider-Man franchise, Jesus; I didn't answer my phone for a day and
a half. Instead, I just sat alone in my apartment and drank,
cursing Topher Grace at the top of my lungs. There
really wasn't much else to do.

Even though the effects of President Obama's $447 billion Jobs Act
are still unclear, Wisconsin officials are optimistic Wisconsin
schools will benefit from the act.

Mike Mikalsen and I don't agree on much. Mikalsen, the research
assistant and lead strategist for state Rep. Steve Nass,
R-Whitewater, has played a central role in Nass' work as the main
thorn in the side of UW-Madison. So as I spoke with Mikalsen over
the phone last week concerning the proposed New Badger Partnership,
it was no surprise that I disagreed with much of what he said.

For many Americans the term nanotechnology probably sounds like
something right out of a science fiction novel. For others it may
be a very vague concept.

When walking through the doors of the Alliant Energy Center Friday
night, I couldn't help but pause and say, ""holy shit."" Many
others likely had the same reaction as they were greeted by the
pulsating, sweaty mob of bodies occupying the center of the room at
Bassnectar's sold out show, a thick cloud of smoke hovering above
them. Even from the back of the huge warehouse venue, I could feel
the strong bass and yells of the fans in the soles of my feet. Two
days later and my ears are still ringing.

Sean Daley, better known as Slug, is a storyteller. He and his
producer Ant, make up the hip-hop duo Atmosphere. On their 2010
double-EP To All My Friends, Blood Makes The Blade Holy,
Slug doesn't rap to encourage a behavior change or impart a good
moral, but rather talks about what he knows. Every track on this EP
was simple; Atmosphere created a glimmer of hope for its fans
looking to innovative future albums.

This past semester can be summarized by a series of misadventures
and near-escapes punctuated by awkward silences, yelling in mobs,
too much whiskey and summer internship applications. I laboriously
slaved over every meticulous detail, being sure to avoid those
dreaded dangling modifiers and… alliteration. I mastered the
language of being highly specific yet comparatively vague all at
the same time. I accidentally memorized all the ZIP codes down the
California coastline. And, I ended up spending over $60 just to
mail all this bullshit.

Working as a Madison Common Council alderman requires a pragmatic
approach to city politics, new policy initiatives and an openness
to differing opinions. That is why we are endorsing Sam Stevenson
for District 2.
