When someone says the word America,"" we all conjure up
different images in our minds. Some might think of a painfully
mundane New Jersey suburb, some of a farm in a remote corner of
northern Wisconsin, some of consumption-crazed midtown Manhattan.
We have these images in our head of what we believe America to be,
but few of us have the ability to adequately express them. This is
the nature of the Coen brothers' wonderful gift and the reason that
films like ""No Country for Old Men"" stand out as consistently
canonical in modern cinema.

In Annie Hall,"" Woody Allen famously told Diane Keaton not to
take any class where they make the students read ""Beowulf."" The
millenniums-old epic poem is famously dense and has given English
students headaches literally since the beginnings of English
classes. Robert Zemeckis' new computer-generated adaptation of
""Beowulf"" may well serve as this generation's Cliff's Notes when
they're assigned the ponderous poem. Rarely have Cliff's Notes
looked so beautiful but felt so boring.

One unassuming day in the 1950s, a plastic bag of wriggling fish
was dropped into Lake Victoria in Africa. Three decades later, the
predatory Nile perch dominated the lake as the center of a
multimillion dollar export industry, while simultaneously wiping
out hundreds of endemic fish species and drastically altering the
social fabric of the surrounding countries.

Clothing says a lot about a person. Much like a well-loved
t-shirt, a kimono can come in many shapes and colors which all tell
a story about the garment's past. Crafting Kimono,"" the new
exhibit at the Human Ecology Design Gallery, explores the art of
this traditional Japanese attire.

Unpredictable. Unbelievable. Exhilarating. Whatever adjective
you want to use, the fact remains that the 2007 college football

Although the terrorist attacks of Sept.. 11 are now several
years behind us, it's a sensitive subject and most filmmakers have
avoided plots that leave Americans exposed to violent acts of
terrorism. It's a fine line, and writer Matthew Michael Carnahan
and director Peter Berg's decision to walk it could ultimately
define the success of their latest heart-stopping international
thriller, The Kingdom.""

Xenophobia has arrested the ears of pop music. Today, most bands
would rather manufacture albums for pre-sold audiences of bumping
grinders, emo-whiners or vacuous bubblegum brains than recreate
their music. Why change their tune when a parrot in an echo-chamber
still goes platinum? Upon hearing The Shepherd's Dog, the new album
from Sam Beam (alias: Iron & Wine), soft and sensual folk
lullabies have transformed into dabblings of psychedelics, jazz and
even reggae.

As one walks through the dimly lit rooms housing the Natura
Morta"" Medici ""still life"" collections at the Chazen Museum of
Art, it becomes easy to see how the Italian term for still life
developed from the word for ""death."" The botanical subjects of
the paintings emerge vividly from an eerie and intense darkness as
if they decorated the gates of the Underworld - the meticulousness
of their creation at once fantastic and frighteningly
realistic.

Ethnic movies at Memorial Union, live international bands on the
terrace and a variety of food stands on State Street are just some
of the perks of attending school at UW-Madison. After being
immersed in other cultures, I did not anticipate seeing the
outright bigotry as I have.

Think back to when eating Lunchables was the highlight of your
week. Try to imagine what it was like when you tagged along with
your mother to fill up the family van at the local gas station for
around a dollar per gallon.

The Apostle Islands sparkle like green emeralds against the deep
blues of Lake Superior, with occasional flashes of white beach
flanking the vibrant green. Believed to have been named by the
early Jesuits who drew up maps of the area, the Apostle Islands
were originally inhabitated by the Ojibwe people who lived
throughout the Great Lakes area.
