Before I saw them live, I wasn’t really a big fan of SURFACES. While I knew and enjoyed a few of their hit songs, like “Sunday Best,” “24 / 7 / 365” and “Heaven Falls / Fall on Me,” SURFACES’ music isn’t something that I’d ever voluntarily put on.

Americans have slowly been coming to terms with the abuses of the criminal justice system. The horrific circumstances of George Floyd’s death last May sparked national protest, shifting the push to end qualified immunity — a rule that protects police officers from civil suits — from libertarian circles into the popular press and the halls of congress. The abuses of power documented in the Making of a Murder Netflix series shocked millions, and the work of the Innocence Project is widely known.

For the last week, Hwang Dong-hyuk’s “Squid Game” has dominated my life. My mother, sister and I attempted to dissect the tiniest details of the Korean survival drama for the entirety of an hour-long road trip. A friend and I discussed Halloween costume ideas, and then subsequently scoured Amazon for the now infamous green tracksuits that figure as key imagery of the show. At the beginning of a work call, my supervisor opened with, “Have you watched ‘Squid Game’ yet?”
