It’s been roughly three months since I arrived in Italy, a part of the world often broken down into a few romanticized generalizations invoking adorations of pastas, wines, cheeses and pizzas. The pattern of food association with the culture is, while somewhat accurate, casting a shadow on other elements of Italian society that may be overlooked outside of their niche communities. This, too, was my experience approaching the neorealism film movement of the 20th century.

As Wisconsin weather slowly gets more and more ridiculous, problems typically reserved for the winter months are becoming prevalent once again for students on their daily commute. Students are being punished by Mother Nature for leaving their parkas and footwear with traction at home, and one student had enough after an unfortunate encounter with the pavement at the University and Charter intersection.

David Byrne has tried and succeeded in a variety of musical endeavors throughout his long career: Oscar-winning music for “The Last Emperor” and a place in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, just to name a couple. With his latest release, American Utopia, Byrne attempts to depict the world we live in today according to his own press release for the record. Unless he thinks the world is weird, unclear and mostly dull, he hasn’t succeeded in creating a cohesive and fulfilling album. Byrne fires on all fronts for American Utopia, but after every intriguing string arrangement and animal-referencing lyric, he has only created an odd mess.

Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos’ recent appearance on 60 Minutes made it hard to distinguish between reality and a Saturday Night Live skit. DeVos seems to be lost throughout the entirety of the interview, continuously stumbling over her words as she desperately attempts to portray herself as knowledgeable about the nation’s school systems, failing miserably and hoping to mask her ignorance with a smile. DeVos’ presence during the 60 minutes is frighteningly similar to how Kate McKinnon of SNL portrayed her, but that imitation was a parody meant solely for entertainment. This, disastrously, is the real Betsy DeVos, the real Secretary of Education, and she is just as embarrassing as her SNL counterpart.

Funny how each time a student walks through the doors of College or Memorial Library, they believe that a wave of motivation will wash over them. In reality, this usually doesn’t happen. The sheer fact that we have graced this studious space with our presence seems to be enough effort for the rest of the day.
