Advertisers all over the world have long understood the
marketing value of music. That's why Coca Cola is paying Jack White
to pen a tune for its commercials, and why Pepsi spent more than
$80 million hiring Britney Spears for a promotional campaign
(before firing her for drinking Coke). It is also why, in at least
five continents over the last several years, white supremacist
organizations have been shifting their focus from public rallies
and camo-gear to CDs and band merchandising.

Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not, the debut album
from Arctic Monkeys, was released in the United Kingdom a month
ago, and even before it broke the U.K. debut album sales record, it
had already become a clich?? to discuss Arctic Monkeys' breakout
success.

Flogging Molly came to town and played a show at Memorial Union
Friday night. I was at the concert and decided I might share some
thoughts on it with you, but I've been told concert reviews are
largely useless. Even if such a review convinces you that the show
was worth attending, you are, first, too late to do anything about
it, and second, in want of a time machine. Therefore, I will not
review the show itself, other than to say it was a jolly good
time.

On Lights and Sounds, Yellowcard clearly attempts to grow beyond
the teen punk-pop of their past. Their last album, Ocean Avenue,
achieved mainstream popularity without having any significant depth
or originality, beyond the fact that the Southern California outfit
has a violinist. Lights and Sounds is a different album than Ocean
Avenue, but change is not synonymous with growth.

When Pete Doherty's problems with heroin led to the breakup of
the Libertines in 2004, it seemed unlikely that he would be able to
continue musically for any length of time while landing himself in
handcuffs, jail cells and rehab on a semi-regular basis.
Nevertheless, Doherty formed a new band, Babyshambles, shortly
after splitting with the Libertines and, against considerable odds,
has released a new full-length album, 'Down In Albion.'

The Strokes exploded onto the scene with Is This It?, creating a
refreshing sound that rejuvenated rock 'n roll and opened the door
for the garage rock revival. Their punk attitude and style fit
perfectly into the new millennium, bringing about many
imitators.

While 2005 may not be remembered for a new exciting trend or a
handful of absolutely classic releases, it was still a good year to
be a music fan. There was a glut of very solid albums, making the
difference between No. 6 and No. 26 as slim as any year in recent
memory. Any Top 15 list will have regrettable omissions. The fact
that perennial favorites like The White Stripes and Paul McCartney
and follow-up albums from Antony and the Johnsons and Franz
Ferdinand fell by the wayside is a testament to how many releases
were worth your time this year.

The distance between what was formerly considered underground
and mainstream has been steadily closing in the last few years. A
decade ago, only a handful of acts in the United States, such as
Nirvana, Beck and Weezer, had taken indie source material and
turned it into platinum sales. The kinder times of the new
millennium have made successes out of artists ranging from the
Flaming Lips to Bright Eyes, and even retroactively to the
Pixies.

Released in 2000, the single 'What's Up, Fatlip'? addressed an
obvious question'what has the former Pharcyde MC been doing since
leaving the group after Labcabincalifornia's 1995 release. On that
track, Fatlip sorted through the wreckage of his career and
personal life over poppy piano beats. His excruciating
self-analysis cut against his delivery and the bright production,
creating a brilliant single that promised his future solo album
would be worth the wait.

Last Friday and Saturday were big news days. In case you didn't
pick up a paper or tabloid, here are the big stories in brief'and
forget Wolf Blitzer, because I added some analysis.

The Hold Steady has been labeled by many as a 'bar band,' and
while that may sound simplistic, it is anything but. The band
co-opts the good-time riffs of artists like Thin Lizzy, the horn
sections, sweeping pianos and heartland storytelling of Bruce
Springsteen.

I love Halloween for a lot of reasons: the thrill of blowing
close to a hundred dollars on a costume, the sugar rush of eating a
whole bag of mini candy bars and the backlog of drunken pictures
better than any house party. It's the one holiday where it's simply
not acceptable to stay inside and read, as the whole point is to go
out and be seen in a new light.

At the photo shoot, it quickly became obvious why these guys
wanted to be Wisconsin's favorite mascot. The handstands,
synchronized jumps and \Warrior 3"" poses were all their ideas.
Laughing and cracking jokes the whole time, the impromptu comedy
show continued long after the photographer had left.

If you get your music news from the Internet-and if MTV makes
you wanna (thank you, Beck) smoke crack, there aren't many other
options-you may already have heard that members of Radiohead and
Pulp are being sued along with Warner Brothers as part of a band
naming rights dispute involving the upcoming film \Harry Potter and
the Goblet of Fire.""

With the possible exception of Arcade Fire's Funeral, no debut
album in 2004 received such an unabashedly positive critical
response as Franz Ferdinand.

UW-Madison junior Chris Hanson was born to be a cop. He likes
the nobility behind publicly serving the community. But don't get
on his bad side-he's fascinated by the criminal mind, and he's not
afraid to bust out the cuffs. And you wanna know what he does for
fun? Picks the bad guys out of lineups. But even law-enforcement
has its softer side. Chris says, \Cop chicks are hot, except the
one that hands out moped tickets."" Well, Chris, when you finally
become a cop, maybe you should tell her she has the right to remain
silent.

In the liner notes to Healthy in Paranoid Times, the sixth
studio CD released by Toronto-based alternative rock band Our Lady
Peace-and the band's first in three years-there are various photos
of walls where facts are scrawled.
