Well, I think it’s safe to say this wasn’t expected. After a long spring and summer of blaming COVID-19, the stealing of plays, the lack of fans and the oddity that was 2020 as a whole for last year’s abysmal season, the Badgers were given a chance to play without any of those factors and they looked the exact same.

With students from all over the state, country and world flocking back to Madison and life seemingly returning to a semblance of normalcy, there is great excitement for the year ahead in the minds of those who simply desire to return to the old. A return to some sense of normal is necessary, even. However, with the evolution of new COVID-19 variants and the rise of breakthrough infections despite vaccination, a mindless return to normal proves to be reckless. A more cautious safety plan — perhaps not to the same extent as earlier in the pandemic, but cautious still — may very well be necessary as we continue to learn more about this insidious pathogen.

Disclaimer: I fully recognize that this fruit is as low-hanging as it gets, and frankly, it feels like cheating for me to use it as Almanac material. But I had writer’s block, and my only other idea involved vivid descriptions of Ruth Bader Ginsberg banging Antonin Scalia in the Afterlife, so you’re welcome.

The reality of university education throughout the past year and a half has been far from what many college students have pictured. The “normalcy” of college disappeared along with the increasing cases of COVID-19 in March 2020, and it hasn’t been back since. Rising juniors and seniors this semester have barely caught a glimpse of what the University of Wisconsin fully holds; most rising sophomores haven’t even seen a lecture hall, and incoming freshmen are just holding their breath in anticipation of what this semester will bring.

Walking into the venue for Cabinet of Curiosity's “Sea Change”, a feeling of familial intimacy might wash over you. Metal chairs that anyone might find in storage are arranged in rows and create makeshift aisles in a gravel parking lot. Standing speakers blast the calls of seagulls, the crashing of waves, and the rollings of thunder as audience members search for whatever empty seats were left. Performers, stagehands and other staff hustle around the hulking ship set making last minute preparations. It feels like cousins and other distant relatives had called all members of the family to report to the backyard to witness a play or musical number they'd been practicing all day. In a word, it feels like home.

Music has many geographical hotbeds that consistently produce artists with an undeniable impact on culture. The same can be said about other forms of human expression, such as visual arts, literature and sports. Where one is from has a sizable impact on what their expression looks like.

Anticipation for the annual Mifflin St. Block Party has subsided in Madison, Wis. Thousands of crushed cans and shattered glass were all that remained Sunday morning as the students in attendance reeled from their collective “post weekend denial.” Public concerns regarding student safety and COVID-19 precautions are being raised in response to the large congregation of maskless children. However, these questions appeared insignificant and misguided in light of the heroic act that took place Saturday.
