Following an intense overtime victory of 73-71 against Vanderbilt in the third and final game of the Paradise Jam holiday tournament, the Badgers, now 3-3 and off to their best start to the year since the 2012-’13 season, hope to settle down after a busy few days of consecutive games as they prepare to face Pittsburgh (5-1) Wednesday night.

After facing a tough season last year, the Wisconsin women’s basketball team (1-0) knew it was going to have to make some serious improvements if it wanted to make an impact against teams this year. However, after blowing out UW-Platteville in its lone exhibition game many were interested to see how the Badgers’ success would carry them into their season opener against UNC-Charlotte on Sunday.

“After three years of diligent commenting on the Facebook, my efforts have finally produced the results I’ve been expecting,” stated Madison resident and stay-at-home mom, Barb Suzanna. Despite tens of millions of members and supporters, the NRA recently declared the abolishment of its storied organization. The group has been on the tipping point due to a nationwide surge in gun violence over the past few years, but Barb’s comment finally pushed them over the edge, sparking the dissolution of the organization, which has existed since 1871.

Freshman Brad Davison couldn’t stop smiling at the post-game dais after Wisconsin’s 85-56 exhibition victory over UW-Stout. His euphoria remained present when he walked off the podium in his red Wisconsin sweat-jacket and khaki pants, almost forgetting his backpack in the process, as he thanked the reporters in front of him before exiting the interview room.

The still undefeated No. 1 Badgers (12-0-0) are returning home this weekend for a series with No. 4 Ohio State (7-0-1) after sweeping No. 7 Minnesota last weekend. The Buckeyes will look to build on their near-perfect record with their only blemish being a 5-5 tie which ended in a 2-0 shootout win for Ohio State.

It took almost seven minutes for the Wisconsin Badgers to score its second field goal of the game. But after freshman guard Kobe King knocked down a pull-up jumper with just over 13 minutes to play in the first half of UW’s exhibition game against Northern Iowa Wednesday night, the Badgers offense started to click.

The No. 1 Badgers (10-0-0) are heading to Ridder Arena in Minnesota to play the No. 6 Golden Gophers (5-2-1) this weekend, after a sweep Bemidji State at home. Minnesota is coming off a weekend where it swept No. 8 Minnesota Duluth, and moved up a spot in the USCHO poll.

After upsetting then-No. 23 Texas 51-41 on the road in their season opener, the Maryland Terrapins (1-2 Big Ten, 3-3 overall) have had a rollercoaster season. The Terps routed Towson in their second game before being blown out by the University of Central Florida 38-10 at home. Maryland then outlasted Minnesota to earn a 31-24 road win before being picked apart by No. 9 Ohio State 62-14 in Columbus. In their last game, the Terps fell at home to Northwestern, 37-21.

Week seven was quite an eventful one for the Big Ten with Rutgers topping Illinois 35-21, Northwestern topping Maryland 37-21, Michigan State slipping by Minnesota 30-27 and Ohio State dismantling Nebraska 56-14. Being from SEC country, where there are three teams called the Tigers and two called the Bulldogs, I always appreciated the Big Ten’s unique nicknames and mascots. Almost all of the nicknames have some local historical reason and there is no doubt that there is intense pride in your local college’s mascot.
