Holiday movie programming is a lot like Holiday food sales. Any idiot can sell a stale fruitcake on December 24th, but only the most appealing Easter egg will find a buyer in May. Romantic comedies released for Valentine's Day face a similar challenge. Bad ones can succeed, but only the strong will linger. This year brought \Hitch"" for the 14th, and like the sweetest Cadbury Egg, the new Will Smith vehicle should still be appealing with the holiday gone by, thanks largely to its dynamic star.

Sweet relief comes to Madison for the throngs of teenagers bemoaning the fact that the creative age of classic rock essentially came to an end with the '70s. For every guy with sort of long hair who would, in a moment, trade in his collection of Led Zeppelin T-shirts for the opportunity to travel back in time and see them in concert, that sweet relief comes tonight in the form of a Dallas-based band called The Secret Machines.
The Wisconsin men's basketball team was able to put its loss this past Tuesday to top-ranked Illinois behind them and left Happy Valley with a 76-50 victory over Penn State on Saturday night.
After writing \Fight Club,"" his debut novel later produced as a major film, Chuck Palahniuk developed a cult following for his visceral, detailed and concise writing style. As finals loom, students who procrastinated during the semester will be paying the price, burning the midnight oil into the wee hours of the morn. Many of them will stave off sleep with a caffeine source of choice: coffee, tea, soft drinks or caffeine pills. But while caffeine can keep sleep at bay, it can leave you too wired and jittery to study effectively.
The record number of voters who flocked to polling places Tuesday did not deter Wisconsin from having a smooth electoral process, according to various state officials.
Every once in a while, an acting performance comes along that not only carries a movie, but redefines a career and monopolizes all further conversations about the year's best. Tom Hanks did it in \Forrest Gump."" Charlize Theron did it in ""Monster."" And, now, Jamie Foxx has done it with ""Ray,"" a biographical film about the great soul singer, Ray Charles. The movie is ultimately less about the singer than it is about Foxx's stunning ascent from a middling comedic actor into the ranks of America's best dramatic screen performers.

Recently, the Chiron Corporation notified the United States and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that it would not be able to provide its promised flu vaccine supply to millions of expecting citizens. Due to contamination, the company's license was suspended for three months, preventing at least half of the anticipated vaccine from reaching American citizens in time for flu season. Rightly so, this dilemma has caused quite an uproar nationwide as the chance for protection against the illness becomes less of a certainty.
This past Sunday, former Astros and Padres star Ken Caminiti, the 1996 National League MVP, died of an apparent heart attack at the premature age of 41.
This past August, 82-year-old comedian Rodney Dangerfield entered a Los Angeles hospital for heart surgery. But not without offering a joke first.
America is ready for a new sweetheart. Julia Roberts, Sandra Bullock and Meg Ryan are all on the way out, and the current batch of high-powered leading ladies-Nicole Kidman, Halle Berry and Catherine Zeta-Jones-are not cut out for the romantic, sympathetic and funny roles that characterize the lofty title. So who is ready to step in? That's a tough question. But The Daily Cardinal is here to break down some of the contenders exiting and entering the \Sweetheart Battle Royale.""
We, at The Daily Cardinal Arts Desk, realize that adjusting to any new experience is hard. As a public service to our readership we asked rockstars ranging from Fountains of Wayne to The Decemberests to Ben Kweller to offer their advice. Each was asked the question \How can college freshmen be cool?""
After losing half of their starters to graduation, this year's women's volleyball team is making up what they lost in experience in height, averaging 6'0\ on the court. While this year's team may be young, newly-named freshman setter Jackie Simpson has a semester up on her freshman teammates after graduating high school early last year, which should prove to be a huge boost for the team.
Before it arrived in theaters, \Mean Girls"" seemed like a bad mix. In one corner, there was director Mark Waters, re-teaming with young star Lindsey Lohan, to follow up the strong ""Freaky Friday."" In the other corner, there was Tina Fey, head writer of ""Saturday Night Live,"" slated to adapt Rosalind Wiseman's book and co-star in the film. But instead of an ugly joining of forces, the collaboration between the two camps has turned out to be another triumph for Waters and Lohan and a renaissance of freshness for Fey.
In political discussions, the United States is often referred to as the last remaining superpower in the world. This is concerning, because it suggests the United States will continue to be the world's strongest military power.
When one thinks about cafeteria food, images of mystery meat, lunch ladies, and food fights usually come to mind. But here at the UW, those are more or less a thing of the past. Dormitory dining may still be a far cry from gourmet, but you might be surprised what one swipe of your WisCard can buy.
