Wavves, the surf-rock punks from So-Cal, came through Madison Monday to play a show at the Majestic. When I spoke with guitarist Alex Gates last week, he told me the only shows they’ve been doing since their last tour were one-offs in college towns. So, naturally, they felt right at home.
Tuesday night the Majestic promised a stacked lineup of female hip-hop artists. First up was Denver-born soul hip-hop songstress Povi. Though at past performances she has glistened on the stages of Denver and her current home Oakland, Calif., unfortunately her Madison performance fell slightly short. While the crowd was hyped up on excitement for the acts to follow, no one was really familiar with Povi’s music, so audience engagement and participation was low. Even with the music itself being relatively unknown, it was nice to bop around to, and I did marvel at the beauty of Povi’s vocal strength, that is until the peak of awkward concert events occurred.
Next year, former U.S. Sen. Russ Feingold, D-Wis., will attempt to win back the Senate seat he lost to Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Wis., six years ago.
If you take a look at Wavves’s song titles and lyrics, you’d think they were a moping emo band 10 years late to the party. But while their lyrics are dark and desperate, their music is anything but. In fact, they make the party. The So-Cal surf-rock band, formed originally as a solo project by frontman Nathan Williams, finds ways to make people happily sing along to lyrics like “Misery, will you comfort me?” and “We’ll all die alone, just the way we live.” With whining verses and catchy, head-banging hooks, Wavves turn their sad songs into party anthems, and they’re taking their music on tour for the first time in years to support their upcoming album, V.
On the fifth floor of Lathrop Hall, every new cohort is taught the pride of the phrase that heads this article. Each student shouts in boisterous unison the phrase that welcomed them from across the country. Students proudly hail from cities like Phoenix, Ariz., Brooklyn, N.Y., the Bay Area in California, Chicago, Ill., and, of course, Madison, Wis. They hold dear the cultures they carry together in this room. They are the movement of the hip-hop and urban arts scholarship program First Wave, who speak with poetry, rap, beat, vocal, dance and visual art, and I am blessed to use my talents for this program.
The end is near. Doomsday prophecies aside, the school year is nearly complete and for a lot of Badgers, myself included, it means our time in college is nearly over as well. Compared to the life ahead of us, college is but a small fraction of time. As short as it seemed, it has been one hell of a trip and one that will have a profound impact on me for the rest of my life. More than the friendships, classes, parties and Union Terrace, college is a remarkable opportunity to challenge yourself and in so doing, discover your potential.

INDIANAPOLIS—Saturday night’s Final Four showdown between top seeds Kentucky and Wisconsin has all the ingredients to be an evenly matched contest, as the country’s most efficient offense will take on the nation’s most stout defense. Since Ken Pomeroy started tracking tempo-free statistics back in 2002, no team has posted a higher offensive efficiency rating than this Wisconsin team.

Daystar Peterson, better known by stage names Tory Lanez and Argentina Fargo, is a rapper from Ontario, Canada who has been emerging in a big way with his high-pitched singing and heavy rap-flow. Lanez performed in front of a small, yet eager, crowd at The Frequency Monday night.
