When I opened my eyes and glanced out my window last Saturday
morning, I saw fellow students chugging bottles of O'Douls. Certain
that I was hallucinating, I stumbled into the kitchen where I found
the shelves stocked with nothing but green vegetables and tofu
burgers. Still perplexed, I plopped down on the couch and turned on
the TV. Instead of seeing Lee Corso, Kirk Herbstreit and the rest
of the ESPN Gameday crew, I watched in horror as Bill O'Reilly and
Rush Limbaugh locked lips in a passionate make-out session. Just
when O'Reilly began to tug at Limbaugh's tie, I woke up.

The more things change, the more some things stay the same.
After the Top 15 in the BCS once again reshuffled itself after a
tumultuous Week 11, only one thing is certain: No. 2 Michigan and
No. 1 Ohio State are the two best teams in the nation. Oh, and by
the way, they are playing in Columbus Saturday. The winner of the
showdown will earn a trip to Glendale, AZ, to play in the BCS
National Championship Game. The loser will suffer the disgrace
of...well...possibly playing in the National Championship Game in a
rematch with the winner, but more likely earning a bid to play in
the Rose Bowl in Pasadena.

The march to the NCAA tournament is on, and with just six more
conference matches left to play, the UW volleyball team is hoping
to add to their current five match win streak in an effort to build
momentum going into the post season. Wisconsin (11-3 Big Ten, 19-5
overall) will take on Northwestern (7-7, 13-10) and Illinois (5-9,
14-10) this weekend at the Field House in a pair of matches that
will likely have great implications in the Big Ten standings.

I read with considerable disappointment Adam Seston's opinion
piece on ""Language credits an unnecessary hassle,"" in The Daily
Cardinal last Wednesday. Let's put aside the issue of when
UW-Madison students should fulfill their language requirements and
focus on what was most troubling about the essay.

The joys of fatherhood must be so joyful that it simply makes my
eyes well up. Thinking of Kevin Costner playing catch with his dad
on that Iowa cornfield makes me realize what dreams are made of.
Watching your children mature into adults, making life decisions
and realizing that you had such a huge part in their life has to be
so satisfying.

If it's possible to be anointed a saint without religious
backing, John Lennon has earned that honor many times over. Founder
of the Beatles, creative genius and spokesman for peace,
assassinated in the prime of life—Lennon's story is the stuff of
legend. But today, Lennon's fans tend to focus on his music and his
death, ignoring the man in favor of the image.

With the Wisconsin men's basketball team not having played
against an actual opponent yet, it is possible the team might still
have a few kinks to be worked out. That was not the case for the
Badgers Friday, as they took care of business, dominating their
Division III opponent, UW-Stout, 82-33.

First it was the Montagues and the Capulets. Then came Death Row
Records against Bad Boy Entertainment. Now it's Nicole and Paris
(and by the way, Nicole would totally dominate in a brawl because I
hear she goes for the ankles). Whether it's 16th century Italian
families, hip-hop record labels or pathetic yet enjoyable celebrity
catfights, one thing is certain—rivalries never die. The trend
continues on this very campus through the Wisconsinite and the
Coastie.

""Wait, what?"" I exclaimed to my academic advisor with shock
when he informed me I needed to take three semesters of a foreign
language in order to graduate with a Bachelor of Science degree.
That was three years ago, and only now has the wake created from
that terrifying discovery finally deteriorated.

People have problems. People want other people to listen to
their problems. Sometimes a simple opening of the ears and sealing
of the lips makes a world of difference to that needy, vocal
individual. An occasional ""that sucks"" or ""man, I hate that""
doesn't hurt, but usually isn't mandatory.

After releasing two albums and giving us this decade's best
dance-punk-New Wave mash-up—""Danger! High Voltage""—years before
those kinds of songs became trendy, Electric Six are back with
their stellar new album, Switzerland. Dick Valentine spoke with The
Daily Cardinal recently in anticipation of the Electric Six's show
tonight at the Annex.

It began as a normal Monday in October. As the sun rose into the

frying pans across the country. Yet on this morning, a glance at
the sports page interrupted the usual sounds of breakfast.
