Two weekends ago, the Stadium Bar came under fire from Madison
Mayor Dave Cieslewicz and Ald. Robbie Webber, District 5, for
posting their phone numbers, in addition to Ald. Julia Kerr,
District 13, on a large screen television monitor outside after the
Oct. 11 football game against Penn State. Posting these numbers

Roughly a week ago, I found myself working under deadline while
sequestered in an empty classroom with a laptop, the frigid dregs
of a cup of coffee, and the wish it was not 3:30 a.m. Previous
generations might have described this as burning the midnight
oil,"" a phrase suggesting cloistered monks hunched over papyrus
scrolls by lamplight, a marked contrast from the over-caffeinated
undergraduate dividing time between bathroom breaks and staring at
a blank Word document.

Every election season, politicians have a tendency to alter
their stances on hot-button issues in a shallow attempt to pander
to the electorate. In contrast, Hollywood tends to go in the
opposite direction, churning out scathing, hardcore political
material. Oliver Stone appears to have forgotten this tradition, as
his latest film, W."" - a biopic about America's current lame-duck
president (played by Josh Brolin) - raises the question of how the
creator of such controversial fare as ""JFK"" and ""Natural Born
Killers"" could create something so bland and toothless.

In 10 years, when today's fifth and sixth graders are
high-stepping around this campus like they own the place, I hope
there's a little commemorative plaque lying about, somewhere real
unavoidable and inconvenient that reminds those greasy runts of
what I had to sacrifice so that that walk of theirs could be so
spectacular. When they mosey down the so-called East Campus Mall,
or past the shiny new Wisconsin Institutes for Discovery; as they
traverse sidewalks atop efficient new utility systems in Library
Mall or sip the newest flavored water in the no-longer poopy Union
South; when they feel not-depressed when they head off to class in
a normal-looking Humanities Building or gaze upon the finished
product of whatever-the-heck-they're-doing right now to the Kohl
Center lawn, I hope the Badger students of tomorrow are somehow
made aware that it was alums like me that put up with a whole lot
of walking around shit so they could have all that.

Wisconsin's hockey season has just started up, and I couldn't be
more excited about it. I have never actually played hockey, nor am
I able to stand on ice skates for more than five minutes, but
that's not to say I can't be a huge Badgers hockey fan.

With one of the most important presidential elections in the
history of this great country just 20 days away, it is important to
note the convenience of registering. While organizations such as
Progressive Future, ASM and WISPIRG have been extremely helpful in
registering voters at new addresses in less than a minute, there
still seems to be a large wave of students taking the registration
for granted. If you registered for the primary, but have since
moved, you need to re-register at your new address.

There has been very little in the way of good economic news in
the last year - especially in the last few months. In less than a
year, unemployment has increased 1.4 percent. The number of
unemployed persons has increased by 2.2 million with long-term
unemployment rising to 728,000. Our national debt has almost
doubled to over $10 trillion in less than 6 years and our financial
stability grows ever more precarious.

Of all instances of a weekday game foreshadowing the college
football weekend, none were greater than last Thursday's. Unranked
Oregon State, led by freshman running back Jacquizz Rodgers,
created a domino effect in the top 25 with a victory over the No. 1
USC Trojans. From there on out, the rest of the dominoes fell as
the top 25 posted a 10-8 record, including losses from the No. 3,
No. 4, and No. 9 teams. Georgia, last week's No. 3 team, was
embarrassed in their own stadium by No. 8 Alabama and were
relegated to the No. 11 spot while Alabama moved up to No. 2.
Unranked Ole Miss used a blocked field goal to topple No. 4 Florida
in Gainesville and in Ann Arbor; everyone reading this article
knows what happened last week to the Badgers.

I'm sure my vocabulary and diction could have used some work,
but by the time I began first grade, I was pretty pleased with how
well I had picked up the English language. Emboldened by that early
achievement, I was unpleasantly surprised 12 years later to find
that I hadn't succeeded in learning a second or third - worse, I'd
soured on the idea of ever studying another.

After reading Thursday's article A New Shade of Green,"" I was
unable to grasp the overall message that Patricia Mo was attempting
to express. Is Patricia Mo stating that students do not know how
nor have the energy to be more environmentally conscious?
Destroying our environment is one of today's most pressing issues.
There has been a tremendous increase in environmental consciousness
on every level, ranging from the fashion industry all the way to
Capitol Hill. In my opinion, Patricia's article discourages student
readers from taking a responsibility to protect this environment by
not realizing herself the significant impact small actions can have
on minimizing our individual eco-footprint.
