The year 2016 presented moviegoers with a diverse array of films. While theaters certainly saw some low lows, the high highs truly hit. From blockbusting superhero movies to quieter indie films, filmmakers crafted both visually stunning and emotionally resonant pieces of cinema for fans of every genre to enjoy. After spending a sunny afternoon at the playground with some of the boys in my hometown, someone said to me, “It would have been nice if you were born a boy instead of a girl.” I was six or seven years old at the time, and it was at this point in my life that I felt a little off about my identity.

Before the season started, it seemed clear that Wisconsin’s linebacker corps would be the strength, not just of the defense, but of the entire team. While that has been true thus far, it hasn’t been because of the same high-profile players many expected.

For many of us in Madison, this past week was a time for shouting out in the open air and joining arms in the middle of the street. So as I headed past a wailing, distressed but hopeful mass on the Capitol steps to see singer and songwriter Alex G play the intimate Frequency, feelings of apprehension and guilt crept in; what an inopportune time to huddle together in a confined, introspective space like The Frequency.

Ever since election night, Democrats in our country have been in uproar. Protests have erupted across the nation, with people denouncing Donald Trump’s message loud and clear. The hashtag #NotMyPresident has gone viral and social media has become a place of hate between people with differing political opinions. Our country seems more divided than ever.

Like many, I was shocked by the results of the election last week. The country is incredibly divided and there are various groups of people who face the prospect of policies that threaten their homes, bodily autonomy and safety. While there is uncertainty about whether and in what form these policies will be enacted, the reports of harassment and hate crimes across the country in the past week alone are terrifying. It is unlikely I will be directly affected by most of these policies, but I am fearful for my friends, loved ones and people in general who will be.

First, try to scrub your skin of the darkness, the tar, that seems to have soaked itself into your pores. You’re young, but have realized that all the kids at school treat you differently. They’ve called you dirty, black. There must be something wrong with you, because your teachers have never told them to stop. Scrub until it hurts, then continue until tears start to stream down your face. Your cries will call your mother’s attention to the bathroom as she tries to calm you.

Facts are reality and truth and should be the basis for all our policy decisions. A fact is something that is known to exist. In the post-fact political world we now live in, facts are spun, criticized and taken as opinions or partisan beliefs.

“Luke Cage” is the newest addition to Netflix’s and Marvel’s superhero TV series collection, released September 30. With “Daredevil,” “Jessica Jones” and the upcoming “Iron Fist” already populating the streaming site’s queues, the Marvel takeover is beginning to feel a bit excessive. However, I am pleasantly sur- prised by what “Luke Cage” brings into the mix, adding fresh charac- ter and charm to the dense lineup.

Compared to voter turnouts in other developed countries, America doesn’t bode well. While we hover around 50 percent, Belgium and Turkey top the charts with roughly 88 percent and 86 percent respectively. Some may view this situation with a “glass-half-full” outlook, but excluding the aforementioned nations still leaves nearly 30 ahead of us. If we already don’t vote, why not just get rid of it altogether?
