I read the recent opinion piece in the Daily Cardinal “The hard truth about red meat” (Samantha Wilcox, November 10), and was compelled to add a pertinent facet to the discussion. As Samantha covered, the recent WHO report was a shock to many who had grown up in a culture where eating meat was the norm, stating that regular consumption of red meat increases our risk of contracting cancer.

I’ll be honest, while I originally wanted to attend UW-Madison for its academics, throughout my last year and a half on campus I’ve become increasingly interested with the surrounding city, specifically the dozens of concert venues just down State Street. From the Orpheum to the Majestic, branching out to the Frequency and bars like High Noon Saloon, there’s live music nearly every night in Madison. I’ve had the chance to see some of my favorite bands perform just around the corner from my apartment, making me grateful that the campus and city life are so intertwined. While I’ll probably always spend too much of my (non-existent) income on these concerts, I also think it’s important to spread some of my time to another form of art throughout the city: theater.

The last time the Wisconsin Badgers (2-3) played the Wake Forest Demon Deacons (5-1) was 1992. The Badgers lost by 26 in Madison. Boyz II Men’s “End of the Road” was the top song of the year and “The Silence of the Lambs”won the Oscar for Best Picture. But this time around, the Badgers hope their road trip to Winston-Salem marks the end of their losing road, and the beginning of their winning one.

It’s not every day that the head coach of a prestigious program with the second-most all-time wins and highest winning percentage in school history gets fired. It’s also not every day that it’s actually a surprise that a coach with more impressive credentials got to keep his job. The former describes Georgia’s Mark Richt and the latter LSU’s Les Miles.

Bonding over the frequent mutual butchering of our names, Wyatt Cenac and I chatted on the phone a couple weeks ago about that grave injustice. Sharing a name with a famous cowboy apparently has not fared as well for him as he would have hoped, something that thankfully cannot be said about his comedy career. An Emmy and Writer’s Guild of America award winner, Cenac spent the past four years at “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart” and is also a stand-up comedian, actor, writer and producer. With two comedy specials under his belt, “Brooklyn” and “Comedy Person,” Cenac also recently starred in the pilot for a show in the works with director Greg Daniels of “The Office” and “Parks & Recreation” called “The Group.” Swinging through The Comedy Club this week from Thursday through Saturday, Cenac was happy to entertain my questions on comedy, zombies and superheroes.

The Barrymore was alive with energy and as I approached the flashing sign from the sidewalk there was a line of chattering people winding out the door and a good 5 feet down the sidewalk. A red sign greeted those who were less prepared with a bold “SOLD OUT,” to which they sighed and walked away. Reminiscent of an old movie theater, the Barrymore was looking charming as ever on the evening of the Grace Potter show.

UW-Madison’s thriving art department continually brings in brilliant artists and instructors to its Visiting Artist Colloquium, and Kate Roberts is no exception. With both a BFA and a MFA in ceramics from Alfred University, one of the top ceramics programs in the country, she’s carried her unique approach to ceramic art through residencies and internships at art centers around the world. This includes Anderson Ranch Arts Center in Colorado, La Meridiana in Italy, Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris, Project Art in Massachusetts and Truro Center for the Arts at Castle Hill in Massachusetts. Her work is currently on display in the Art Lofts Gallery in a mixed-media show entitled “Strange Habits.” The show opened on Friday, October 2 and features Robert’s new work and several other talented instructors including Jordan Adams, Barbara Landes, Kate Roberts, Barry Roal Carlsen, Maggie Snyder, Grace Sullivan and Michael Velliquette. It is a collective commentary on habitual human nature and the physical and abstract presence that it exudes in our lives and the world around us.
