Pretentious as it sounds, rock is dying.

Most people hate MTV because it doesn't play much music anymore. This is a strange reason to dislike the network, NBC hasn't played a music video in quite a while either. The Superbowl halftime show was a knock against the network, but to be blunt, the recent cult of nipple rage was small potatoes. Recently MTV has made political moves that should legitimately anger everyone who isn't a media conglomerate, and no, not just by using Toby Keith in their youth voting campaign. The pop culture juggernaut has begun intimidating European independent labels to try to cut their royalties in half.
It is high time for a new Sonic Youth in America. There is a smug safety most new indie bands seem to draw from. Power pop, garage revival and ironic rock produce some nifty songs, but nothing seems to have the danger and taboo that noise rock used to. I miss it. I miss abrasive, gutsy, edgy songs. I miss music that I could never sleep after. I miss noisy, clanky, loud songs. I want someone to pick up where they left off. And Sacremento's Hella might be that band.

The year 2004 is finally upon us, bringing with it a leap year, another 252,979,200 seconds of sleep for the healthy minded, and yet another agonizing series of weekends I'll wake up hungover and unable to listen to the best releases expected to come out this year . Here is what I am looking forward to being unable to listen to.
Like a supernova they exploded into the indie consciousness, and just as surely they burned out.?? For 10 long years, Pixies fans heaped dream upon dream of a reunion, with but a faint flicker of real hope in their hearts.
Calvin Johnson is not an easy man to talk to.
Throughout this past year, the direction of indie hip-hop has been all over the spectrum. As the genre continues to diversify, more originality and creativity are seen in projects that create their own path in music. Often, these paths criss-cross in the form of interesting collaborative projects, such as the Jaylib album or The Four Horsemen EP, which puts together the haphazard combination of Killah Priest, Ras Kass, Canibus and Kurupt.
There is a grassroots movement heading inbox to inbox, which, like bowl games and political debates on opinion, we as a staff of arts professionals have to take a stance on: Yoshimi's battle with 3 Doors Down.

And so it has come to this. Every week, between 100 and 300 albums are released in the rock genre alone. Every month, a deluge of magazines review them, ranging from the supermarket-shelved Rolling Stone to the Law of Inertia Magazine, which street team members struggle to give away for free in the subways of Boston. And every year, critics use God-like authority to decree top 10, 15 and 25 lists.
