While most of the campus is hunkered down studying, the women’s volleyball team is taking flight on the court and on a plane to Seattle to play in the NCAA Final Four. The Badgers (12-8 Big Ten, 27-9 overall) beat Purdue last weekend to advance to the Final Four for the first time since 2000. Wisconsin’s next opponent is No. 1 Texas (27-2, 16-0).

Beating an in-state rival and staying undefeated would normally be a season highlight. But as an impressive season continues, it’s beginning to feel all the more normal for the Badgers.

A number of weeks ago, I wrote about an amateur videographer named Chad. Chad is the bane of my existence for a plethora of reasons. However, in my last column, I stuck to his videography skills—or lack thereof. This time, I am here to talk about Chad, the (personal) space invader.

The win or go home mentality is what makes the postseason in any sport so compelling and so thrilling. In collegiate athletics, many senior players have reached their peak and will never play a competitive match again.

While the Badgers (8-6 Big Ten, 19-7 overall) have had quite a few big weekend matchups, this weekend’s homestand may be one of their biggest.

So I saw “12 Years a Slave,” and it was remarkable. You should all see it. It’s beautifully shot and acted, it’s an incredible story, or at least I wish it was incredible, and it’s told as well as any other.

The other day, I’m scrolling through BuzzFeed, and suddenly my heart drops. Surprisingly, it is not due to the baby dressed as Wilson from “Cast Away” but rather the realization that Freakfest is one week away, and yet again, I have no costume.

Third time’s the charm on the road for Gary Andersen and his Badgers (3-1 Big Ten, 5-2 overall). After losing two close road games earlier in the year to Arizona State and No. 4 Ohio State, No. 22 Wisconsin earned its first road win of the season by routing Illinois (0-2, 3-3) 56-32 in Champaign, Ill.

It’s late October. The leaves have only just started to dress themselves in soft, pastel yellows and brilliant reds. An electric chill is in the air, and you can smell the musty tang of cold, damp earth as your boots crunch through a blanket of dead leaves. You reach Picnic Point at sunset, and the burnt umber essence of crackling pine warms your party’s trembling fingers. Marshmallows are passed around, maybe followed by sticks to toast them and that one guy fusses over getting his s’more EXACTLY right. Everybody swaps stories, laughter and a few terrible jokes.

On June 8th, 1954, a beautiful Japanese traditional bell was presented to the United Nations New York headquarters by the United Nations Associations of Japan in the name of People of Nippon. They named the bell for “absolute world peace.” However, there would be no use of tolling such a beautiful bell every year if Japan distances itself from the others. It has been approximately 68 years since the end of WWII and Japan is trying to go back to its “old glorious days” while Germany is walking the path of endless apologies and self-retrospection.
