UW-Madison freshman Alex O’Johnson has made waves in recent days for his heroic display at a qualifying event for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, to be held in 2021. In front of a grand audience of two cameras and a cat, he smashed the Olympic record for discus throwing, reaching 88 meters — or as normal people would say, 288.714 feet — in his very first attempt. Seeing such a stellar first throw, the remaining participant decided to walk away, handing O’Johnson an easy peasy lemon squeezy victory.

After ending the 2019 season 43-19 — the second-most wins in program history and the fastest team to reach 30 wins ever for Wisconsin — Badger softball came into the 2020 season looking to write more stats in the history book. With 13 returning players and some fresh new faces, Wisconsin (10-9 overall) began the season with a hopeful outlook.

The brilliantly funny Paul Virzi is set to perform a five-show run here in Madison, WI, and will be in town from Thursday, Feb. 6 to Saturday, Feb. 8. Virzi has worked with the likes of Pete Davidson, Bill Burr and Judd Apatow. He has released a critically acclaimed stand-up special, his comedy album reached #1 on iTunes, and he is preparing to shoot a second hour-long stand-up special this summer — a new hour of material which will also be performed at his comedy shows this weekend in Madison.

Chicago-based band Whitney’s fourth show in Madison proved to fans that their unique musical talent is here to stay. As someone who’s been a fan of theirs since the release of their 2016 album, Light Upon the Lake, I knew I had to finally see them at the Sylvee: the first stop on the tour for their sophomore album, Forever Turned Around.

Wisconsin (5-3 Big Ten, 12-7 overall) took care of business at home — as head coach Greg Gard earned Big Ten win number 50 — after defeating Nebraska (2-6 Big Ten, 7-12 overall) by a final of 82-68. However, Coach Gard was not the only one with a record setting night; Junior forward Nate Reuvers reached 127 career blocks, passing Rashard Griffith and vaunting himself into fourth place for career blocks in Wisconsin history. The record breaking didn’t end there, as the Badgers also set a new school record with 18 made three-pointers in the game.
