On Wednesday morning, redshirt sophomore swimmer Cierra Runge had the biggest race of her life, swimming the anchor leg in the prelims of the 4x200-meter freestyle relay at the 2016 Olympic Games. Mere hours later, her contribution in the preliminaries did not go unnoticed in the final, where four of her United States teammates, building on the solid race Runge swam in prelims, charged to victory with a time of 7:43.03.

The conventions for the Democratic and Republican parties are just around the corner, and the general election season is heating up. Early polls show that Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump are in a close race, with the former having a slight advantage. Mr. Trump, however, seems to to be certain of victory. In an interesting new development, there are allegations that the billionaire has spent a large amount of campaign funds to purchase an intricate replica of the Iron Throne, the chair of power in the fantasy series “Game of Thrones.”

I’ll be up-front: A former editor of mine recently nicknamed me “one-trick pony” for my repeated coverage of the indie rock band Hippo Campus. He had a point: Thursday marked the group’s third concert in Madison since September, when they performed as an opener for Benjamin Booker. Less than two months later Hippo Campus returned, headlining with songs off their latest EP South. By Thursday’s show at the Majestic Theatre, this one-trick pony was worried the Minnesota-based band wouldn’t be able to engage the audience without the nauseating feeling of deja-vu. However, Hippo Campus managed to electrify the crowd, with help from two opening acts.

Parquet Courts burst onto the scene with their raucous 2013 release Light Up Gold. Their The Feelies and Television-inspired songs distilled the essence of punk and alternative through clever lyrics conveyed by a monotone slacker drawl over chaotic, messy and fierce power chords. Since that release, people have been waiting for the band to finally make its mainstream breakthrough. With their most recent album Human Performance on the legendary U.K. indie label Rough Trade, they are making their case for broad recognition, even though it seems that the band has lost something along the way.

Green Bay, Wis. — After Saturday’s morning practice in Green Bay, Dare Ogunbowale switched out his No. 23 jersey for one with the No. 12 embroidered on it. He wasn’t taking after fellow running back Corey Clement, who has been fluctuating between No. 6 and No. 24 throughout the spring, but rather was expressing his deep and profound love for the Green Bay Packers. His cardinal and white uniform replaced with a white, green and gold one, Ogunbowale proudly displayed his affinity for Aaron Rodgers during the Badgers’ tour of the Packers Hall of Fame at Lambeau Field following their morning session at The Don Hutson Center.

Coming into this past week’s Big Ten Championships at the University of Michigan, many teams did not really know what to expect from the UW women’s swim team. Last year, the Badgers graduated sprinter Ivy Martin, who contributed to six event wins in 2015. This year, Martin proved to be tough to replace, but a solid group of up and coming swimmers helped the Badgers take home a hard-fought sixth-place finish.

Alternative rock is alive and well in Madison. This past Saturday, the Orpheum Theater on State Street hosted a show for the veteran group Metric with the up-and-coming band Joywave as their opener. The show was scheduled for 8:00 p.m. and, to my satisfaction, was right on schedule. A combination of these two alternative synth-pop groups resulted in a show that literally shook the theater.

Much of what head coach Paul Chryst had to say on National Signing Day Feb. 3 was difficult to conceptualize. That’s not to say his recruiting techniques are shrouded in mystery—his style is as straightforward as it gets—but the for the most part, his message had to be trusted blindly.

Mark Johnson, UW legend and head coach of the Wisconsin women’s hockey program (22-1-1 WCHA, 28-1-1 overall), will see a familiar face in Madison this weekend when John Harrington and his Minnesota State Mavericks (0-21-3 WCHA, 3-23-4 overall) visit LaBahn Arena. Both Johnson and Harrington played for team USA in the 1980 Olympics when the team infamously defeated the Soviet Union on their way to winning a gold medal.
