From _Coming on Strong_ through _The Warning_ and now on to
_Made in the Dark_, London's Hot Chip have made a rather quick
shift from mellow, occasionally dreary R&B-inspired electronica
to catchy dance music that deftly re-engineers funk and disco.

A good rule of thumb is that the original version is usually
best. The book is better than the movie, the painting is better
than the print and the original version of a song is better than a
cover.

On Losing My Edge from LCD Soundsystem's eponymous release,
James Murphy tries to reaffirm his street cred in the face of
hipster encroachment from a younger generation. Among other things,
he claims that he was there when Captain Beefheart started up his
first band, that he woke up naked on a beach in Ibiza in 1988 and
that he was the first guy playing Daft Punk to the rock kids.

With Wisconsin football and basketball schedules at hand, it's
fairly easy - think Duke offense slicing through Badger defense
kind of easy - to say this will be one of the more forgettable
sports weekends in Madison.

In terms of sheer musical spectacle, you can scarcely do better
than Béla Fleck and the Flecktones tonight. Fronted by the best
and most innovative banjo player in the world and flanked by the
likes of Victor Wooten, whose bottomless bag of slap-happy licks on
the bass guitar has marked him the premiere player of his own
instrument, the Flecktones are in many ways the musical equivalent
of the Cirque du Soleil.

à ¥With a somewhat successful non-conference campaign behind it,
the No. 9 UW volleyball team (9-1) starts the Big Ten season
tonight with a match against Illinois (8-2) in Champaign. Compared
to nearly every other conference in the country, the Big Ten is
arguably the most difficult league, with five teams currently
sitting in the AVCA Top 25 standings and a slew of players who rank
among the best in the country in every statistical category. The
Badgers were picked in the preseason as the runner-up in the Big
Ten come year's end, but with the senior experience they have on
their roster, they stand a good chance of challenging No. 3 Penn
State for the conference title.

The pervasion of synth-pop is not a new phenomenon as bands like
Duran Duran, Tears for Fears and Depeche Mode popularized the use
of electronic sounds in the 1980s and early '90s. The synthesizer
characterized the new wave era and is still prevalent in modern
bands such as the Killers, Kaiser Chiefs and Franz Ferdinand. But
lately, the synthesizer has found a new home in urban pop, melding
the upbeat funk with the in-your-face pounding of hip-hop.

Being a college student is great. Who else spend most of their
formative years drinking beer and doing as many drugs as the
average touring funk band, fumbling through oral presentations and,
let's not forget the sweetest plum, working only seven months a
year? Hint: Get your answer at the end of this article.

teams battle for position going into their conference tournament or

win, and anything less can permanently damage a team's
momentum.

Even Simon Cowell could not have predicted that Taylor Hicks
would be the next American Idol when he voted to keep the
gray-haired 29-year-old out of Hollywood back in the beginning of
the show's fifth season. However, the charismatic singer soon
shook, twisted and sang his way into the hearts of millions of
viewers, inspiring a fanatically devoted fan base named the Soul

So disco is dead, huh? Well according to Jamiroquai, disco never
died—it just moved to England. For over a decade, frontman Jay Kay
has been a mainstay for the early '90s acid jazz that found its
chief popularity in roller-rinks and sock-hops. While known
primarily for his European playboy status and his titillating
headdresses, Kay also has quite the temper, and recently gave a
""funk you"" to Sony Records when they demanded an eighth album
from the band—forcing Kay out of retirement due to contract
obligations.
