During the Wisconsin volleyball team’s recent home stand the Badgers beat two top-10 teams in a row for the first time in program history, knocking down then-No. 5 Michigan State Sunday and No. 7 Minnesota Wednesday. While their match against Illinois (4-5 Big Ten, 8-11 overall) won’t feature another top foe, the Badgers still look to play at a high level.

With fall weather comes a change in our fashion choices. Adding the additional stylish layers to the everyday look, the women of Madison know what’s up as we rock our sweaters, high boots, beanies and more. But even as these fall trends are coming back into our everyday looks, one number seems to respond well in every season. It’s that one best friend that every girl needs. It’s that slimming number that highlights everything we want. It’s our good friend, the little black dress. The LBD is not seasonal, it is the best friend we have all year round, whether it be fall, spring or summer it never goes out of style. This versatile look can be worn in several different ways, and it’s all about bringing your own punch to your very own LBD.

In his first homily as the leader of the Roman Catholic Church, Pope Francis remarked, “When we do not profess Jesus Christ, we profess the worldliness of the devil, a demonic worldliness.” He wasn’t just talking about some abstract notion of the evil in humankind. He was referring to Satan, a recognized figure in Christian scriptures and a facet of theology since the beginning of the Catholic Church. Pope Paul VI remarked in a 1972 address, “The devil is the enemy number one, the source of all temptation… He is the sophistical perverter of man’s moral equipoise, the malicious seducer.” The church recognizes there is evil in the world. It attributes some of it to fallen human nature: to misguided, misinformed or downright malicious mortals. But it also attributes some evil to Satan, a spiritual and diabolical force who has it out for humans. If we look at Monday’s tragedy in Boston, we can see that yes, indeed, there is evil out there. This article is not intended to allege that the bombing was the direct work of Satan. Rather, I think we can learn a few lessons from Roman Catholic theology about the war between good and evil.

I have written a fair amount this year about Bayern Munich’s rise to the top of the soccer world, and along with it the German Bundesliga’s ascension as king of European football. Now, as the semi-final matchups of the Union of European Football Associations Champions League have been set, the Germans are on the cusp of solidifying their seat on soccer’s throne.

The Wisconsin softball team (6-3 Big Ten, 28-6 overall) travelled to the Twin Cities this weekend to face off against conference foe Minnesota in a three-game series. The Badgers looked to build upon a hot start to their Big Ten schedule winning five of their first six conference games against Illinois and Iowa.

While the weather was freezing the past few months, the Wisconsin men’s tennis team started off its season hot, going 10-2 in its first 12 meets. But last week, while many students ventured to warmer regions, it was the tennis team that went, not cold, but freezing, getting demolished in five meets.

The Wisconsin softball team (22-3 overall) will begin Big Ten play Friday as it travels to Champaign, Ill., to play three games in three days against conference foe Illinois. The Fighting Illini (10-12) carry a four-game wining streak into the weekend and look to knock off a Badger squad that is off to its best start in school history.

Because of the advanced nature of its nuclear weapons infrastructure, The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea is the western world’s public enemy number one at the moment. North Korea recently launched its third successful nuclear explosion. North Korea, a country that doesn’t shy away from unvarnished rhetoric, has repeatedly said the aim of its nuclear program is to have the capability to hit the continental United States. It has also threatened the Republic of Korea with what it calls “final destruction.”

More than any other genre, superb action games are analogous with rhythm. At their best, when players are landing a dizzying flurry of combos in a rhythmic trance of gore, action titles generally require several hours for players to grasp the extent of their complex combat systems.

Wisconsin freshman forward Sam Dekker has slowly worked his way into the conversation for Big Ten freshman of the year with four straight games in double figures. But after a career-high 19 points Tuesday against Nebraska, Dekker not only has himself squarely in the driver’s seat for that honor, but may just be positioned for sixth man of the year as well. Checking in just six minutes into the game with the score tied at 8, Dekker helped the Badgers explode on a 24-2 run that erased what had been a 12-11 Nebraska lead and replaced it with a 35-14 UW advantage.

I hear it time after time: “College basketball’s regular season is irrelevant” or “Nothing matters until March”. Though I am usually successful in restraining myself from the onslaught of dispute I would like to unleash in response, the assertion continues to bother me. Sure, March Madness is fun, but such fun takes nothing away from the importance of the conference schedule. So please don’t change the tournament, because it is great as it is. As any coach or player would tell you, those advocating for such a change on the grounds that it renders the regular season irrelevant are completely off base.
