It is rare that the week featuring Wisconsin vs. Minnesota
arrives and the talk of historical impact in the Big Ten does not
center around Paul Bunyan’s axe. That is exactly the case this
year, as the devastating facts continue to surface in State
College, Penn., and major announcements keep coming from Penn State
University.

With the first BCS standings coming out on Sunday,
this week's slate of college football games are of extra
importance.

Coming off of a seemingly ho-hum Sweet 16 run in 2011, the
Wisconsin men's basketball heads into the 2011-‘12 campaign with
high hopes. While they do have to replace the contributions made
last season by senior forwards Jon Leuer and Keaton Nankivil, the
Badgers bring back their entire starting backcourt as well as key
role players Mike Bruesewitz, Ryan Evans, and Jared Berggren, all
of whom expect to make an even greater impact on the floor.

The Wisconsin men's tennis team (3-3 Big Ten, 9-10 overall) started
off its four-match homestand superbly wirh a 4-3 upset over No. 60
Purdue (1-6, 10-11) Friday, but they were unable to get another
upset after falling to No. 27 Indiana (7-0, 20-4) Sunday 4-3.

Not much was expected from the Wisconisn men's basketball team this
season, certainly not a 25-9 finish, a win over No. 1 Ohio State
and a Sweet 16 berth. The loss of guards Trevon Hughes and Jason
Bohannon, who combined for 40 percent of last year's scoring, had
many thinking that a rebuilding year was coming.

When it was announced that a Penn State men's hockey program would
begin play for the 2012-'13 season, it was assumed that the
establishment of a Big Ten men's hockey conference wouldn't be far
behind. The addition of the Nittany Lions gives the Big Ten the
six-team minimum required to hold a conference championship in
Division I men's hockey.

The Wisconsin women's basketball team (8-3 Big Ten,
13-10 overall) hosts Northwestern (4-6 Big Ten, 15-8 overall)
Thursday night at 7 p.m. The game will be a rematch between two
teams that saw each other 11 days ago when the Badgers handled the
Wildcats 62-50 in Evanston, Ill.

After a heartbreaking overtime loss in East Lansing earlier this
season, the Badgers seek revenge when the Michigan State Spartans
invade the Kohl Center this Sunday.

The Penn State men's basketball team moved closer to making its
first NCAA tournament since 2001 by beating the Badgers Sunday,
something the Nittany Lions haven't accomplished in 8 years.. Led
by four starting seniors and with a tenacious defensive effort, the
Nittany Lions outlasted Wisconsin 56-52, defeating their
fourth-straight Big Ten foe at home.

Beware the man who has nothing to lose. That is certainly the case
for the No. 8 Wisconsin men's hockey team (9-7-2 WCHA, 17-8-3
overall) as they travel to Houghton, Mich., for a date with WCHA
rival Michigan Tech (1-14-3, 3-18-3). The Badgers are riding high
right now and playing their best hockey of the season, but they
can't make the mistake of falling into the trap of overlooking a
struggling Huskies team, especially on the road.

The 2009-'10 season was the best for Wisconsin wrestling in recent
history. It was a season that saw the team earn a fourth place
finish at last year's NCAA Wrestling Championships, tying for the
best finish in school history. The team was honored with four
All-Americans, including undefeated NCAA National Champion
sophomore Andrew Howe (165 pounds). In addition to that, head
coach Barry Davis was named National Wrestling Coaches Association
Coach of the Year.

My how far they have come. When you look at what the No. 9
Wisconsin men's hockey team has done since their disastrous month
of November, you can't help but be impressed. The Badgers have now
won 10 of their past 11 games, but its how they're winning that
shows much they have grown as a team.
(01/21/11 6:00am)
Head coach Mike Eaves said before the No. 9 Wisconsin men's hockey
team's (7-7-2 WCHA, 15-8-3 overall) two-week winter break that the
team would come back a reinvigorated group. As the Badgers head
into their fourth series since break this weekend against
conference foe Minnesota State-Mankato (4-9-3, 10-9-5) they find
themselves in the midst of their best stretch of the season, and
Eaves has to be pleased with what he has seen thus far out of his
young squad.
(01/17/11 6:00am)
Heading into the two-week winter break, the No. 9 Wisconsin men's
hockey team was searching for the consistency that would push them
to the next level, especially from their core of younger,
inexperienced players.

It's official, Pasadena and the Texas Christian University Horned
Frogs lay ahead for the 11-1 Badgers. While TCU was left out of the
BCS Championship game, the Mountain West champions are about as
formidable a foe as Wisconsin could face.
