My fellow Americans, let us pretend for a moment that the
debacle in leadership currently befalling our country is not one of
the greatest administrative blunders since the Watergate scandal a
generation ago. Grisly loss of humanity, violated personal freedom
of citizens, shady uses of presidential power and billions of
dollars in military debt aside, the caricatures from the Bush
administration in the pathetically planned war in Iraq play more
like the plot of a box office-flopping Hollywood farce on a
blundering attempt to govern gone terribly wrong.

A month from right about now, I will be in the airport in a
pantsuit and carrying a briefcase, en route to Chicago from
Minneapolis for a business trip. I'll probably be looking over file
folders, adding notes and highlighting things using the writing
utensils I now keep in my breast pocket. I'll make small talk with
my boss as we wait for the plane to board, smiling so

There is no doubt that the most universally known, worn and
adored clothing of all time is jeans. Their recognizable styles and
brands can be found in every corner of the globe.

A record turnout in the Associated Students of Madison elections
has thwarted a profiteering scheme in which the highest echelons of
student government planned to make a fortune.

We all know about the danger of having too much of a good thing.
Many students realize the truth of this after going on
binge-drinking tangents resulting in long make-out sessions with
the toilet. Directors often face the same dangers of binging, only
in their case it is on CGI, or computer generated images, as
director Ang Lee learned from his floundering CGI-engulfed film
'The Hulk.'

The new year is in full swing now and there are many reasons,
other than resolution fulfillment, to lose those extra pounds. Take
Robert Cole for instance, an Australian prisoner who shed 31 pounds
to escape through a six-inch wide hole he carved in the wall. He
was on the lam for three days before he was captured in a Sydney
shopping mall.

Surprisingly, for students from the warmer West, Wisconsin
winters actually are a feature that draws students to the school,
rather than driving them away.

'Everybody's talkin' all this stuff about me, why won't they
just let me live.' The poignant lyrics and vibrant keyboard tones
of pre-crazy Bobby Brown broke our eardrums as it blasted out on to
the dance floor. I was sitting at a table playing with my camera.

If any question remained concerning whether the university
actually lived up to its No. 1 party school ranking, Halloween
dispelled all doubt. Although the university solidified its party-
school status, Madison's reputation as a politically active campus
remains dubious.

Sure, college football's actual awards will not be given out for
several weeks, but why not take a few minutes in this final 2005
edition of GameDay to bestow some love on the peculiar people and
moments that have made this season memorable in their own special
ways. GameDay presents the following awards:

Afilmmaker with completely unrestricted creative freedom is
almost nonexistent. In order to achieve that powerful status, you
need to have created and/or directed a multibillion dollar
franchise. George Lucas and Steven Spielberg skyrocketed to the
upper echelon of the industry not only because their films are
usually gigantic hits, but because the projects they pick are safe.
Whereas Lucas has ridden the 'Star Wars' phenomenon and since 1977,
Spielberg mostly chooses event films headlined by a huge
celebrity.

In between studying for midterms and apple picking, I have been
keeping an eye out for the latest trends of the new school year. As
you will come to find out, I am not impressed by most of them. Your
assumptions are correct. I am the last person who should be
reporting on trends, but too bad. When the fashion-mavens and
style-watchers get their own columns, they can have at it. Until
then, I will be playing dual roles.

Why is it that the quality shows on network television are
usually cancelled just as they're hitting their stride? Apparently
witless twaddle like \Will and Grace,"" ""Dharma and Greg"" and
""Ally McBeal"" can fester and stink up the tube for years on end,
yet all-around-wonderful shows like ""Freaks and Geeks and
""Undeclared"" (from ""40-Year-Old Virgin"" director Judd Apatow)
can't even make it through one season.

I was standing in the crowd at a Spoon concert this past summer
when suddenly I got the feeling that something was wrong. I looked
at the people around me. Everyone seemed fine. There were no
fights, no panic attacks, no sudden kidney explosions. They were
all just standing there. I suddenly realized; that was exactly the
point.

Typically, nature documentaries romanticize their animal
subjects, which is not surprising considering their makers intend
to emphasize the natural beauty inherent in many wildlife
practices. The recent Oscar nominee \Winged Migration"" and
especially this summer's smash hit, ""March of the Penguins,""
humanized their beaked stars, the latter going so far as to suggest
evidence of unconditional parental love in the penguins' grueling,
titular march.

A reliable way for an esteemed director to prove his or her
versatility is the 180 degree turn; sheer talent alone can only
carry a career so far. Veterans notable for a distinct tendency
suddenly shun it dramatically and flamboyantly refute any potential
one-trick pony criticism.

Back in New York, a friend of my brother once asked me what we
do for fun out in Madison.
