Cover art is probably one of the least essential ingredients in
the making of a successful album. And yet, it's always strangely
satisfying to buy a record and find that the artist has managed to
capture the essence of their record via a simple insert. Salient
examples include the chaos of Pavement's Slanted and Enchanted or
the ethereal nature of Sigur Rós' Agætis Byrjun.

It is no secret that outstanding leadership in athletics is a
crucial element in achieving the greatest potential success for a
team. The Badger men's hockey team has discovered early this season
that tremendous dividends can be gained in quality, not quantity.

Many remember Vanessa Carlton's first hit, A Thousand Miles,""
but few can probably name more of her music. Despite a melodic,
honeyed voice and catchy piano rhythms, she hasn't had a great deal
of commercial success. Her third album, _Heroes & Thieves_, has
the potential to change that.

Few bands today are able to touch the human spirit with their
music. It takes a rare degree of vulnerability, a delicate
emotional connection that transcends past the physical senses to
make the listener feel something truly soulful, as though the
artist has tapped into one's innermost sense of being. Band of
Horses are one of these few bands, and their newest release, Cease
to Begin, plays gently on the heartstrings for an experience that
is uniquely lighthearted and moving.

It is 12:29 a.m. Wednesday morning. The ding of an electronic
bell echoing throughout my room indicates a new e-mail. Click. Four
years is way too long for this moment... download commences,
completes and In Rainbows is added to the iPod.

When a police officer killed six people in a shooting rage and
then took his own life Sunday in Crandon, Wis., it sparked
questions about statewide police hiring processes and firearm
policies. Local police say they evaluate their officers rigorously
and issue weapons as needed.

Initially, Big Lionhearted and the Gallant Man seems a
presumptuous title for a debut album, implying an epic tale and an
album of grandiose proportions. Boddicker, however, delivers with
an intriguing blend of raw talent and sophistication.

Fast food restaurants in the downtown area rely on business from
late-night drinkers, but some owners say the rowdy and destructive

We have all seen this statement before: In God We Trust. Have
you ever wondered why the dollar in your pocket makes this
proclamation? After all, isn't there supposed to be separation
between church and state?

Over the years, Chris Carrabba has taken a lot of criticism for
his honest ballads. With poetry rivaled by few, classic Dashboard
Confessional albums like The Places You Have Come To Fear the Most
have become the soundtracks to every tragedy of betrayal, romance
and high school breakups.

The Wisconsin defense showed Saturday that while it has great
ability to make a big stop when it counts, there are plenty of
kinks that need to be worked out before this Saturday's contest at
Illinois.

Xenophobia has arrested the ears of pop music. Today, most bands
would rather manufacture albums for pre-sold audiences of bumping
grinders, emo-whiners or vacuous bubblegum brains than recreate
their music. Why change their tune when a parrot in an echo-chamber
still goes platinum? Upon hearing The Shepherd's Dog, the new album
from Sam Beam (alias: Iron & Wine), soft and sensual folk
lullabies have transformed into dabblings of psychedelics, jazz and
even reggae.

The pervasion of synth-pop is not a new phenomenon as bands like
Duran Duran, Tears for Fears and Depeche Mode popularized the use
of electronic sounds in the 1980s and early '90s. The synthesizer
characterized the new wave era and is still prevalent in modern
bands such as the Killers, Kaiser Chiefs and Franz Ferdinand. But
lately, the synthesizer has found a new home in urban pop, melding
the upbeat funk with the in-your-face pounding of hip-hop.
