How does a band from a city that produces such diverse, successful indie artists keep from falling to the wayside? Hospitality fires back with their sophomore LP Trouble—the shedding of old skin for a tougher, more intriguing one. The Brooklyn trio led by Amber Papini has left its Ivy League college-pop sound behind and come back with an album that becomes an amalgamation of indie rock subgenres. They steer away from the sophomore slump by creating a unique, challenging album that showcases their ability to be something different and look good while doing it.

Breakups and music seem to go hand-in-hand. Maybe it’s because our emotions are so damn confusing that we can’t figure them out without the help of some of our favorite musical geniuses. Or maybe there are just so many songs written about break-ups it’s almost impossible not to find one you can relate to.

Oftentimes, a musician is identified by a title rather than their name, such as how Bruce Springsteen is “the Boss” or how that guy from the Foo Fighters is “that guy from Nirvana.” With their new release Initiation, ERAAS define their title. It’s nowhere near as playful, but with their combination of haunting gothic synthesizers and Brooklyn-based hip-hop beats, ERAAS earns their title: “painters.” Sure, it’s no “The Boss,” but there are few albums that can quite so vividly paint a picture in the minds of their listener.

Wooden Shjips is a psychedelic band with a minimalist style for rock 'n' roll. This slightly old-fashioned group came together in 2006 to create music that would transcend time. Back to Land is only the group’s second album recorded outside of their base in San Francisco.

Leyland Kirby, who began primarily as a noise artist, has expanded his horizons toward original and breathtaking ambient music. In June, Kirby released An Empty Bliss Beyond This World under his more well-known pseudonym, The Caretaker, inspired by the haunted ballroom scene in “The Shining.” Composed of hauntingly beautiful ballroom dance edits, the record is based on a study of Alzheimer patients’ ability to recall the songs of their pasts, and with them, their recollections of places, people and sensations. Known for his creativity, Kirby centers his projects on a particular theme and each one is wrought with emotion adapted to the particular situation, in this case, death and despair.

Chris Palko—stage name Cage—must appeal to someone out there. Over the course of streaming his new album Kill the Architect and looking into his previous albums, I saw plenty of fans that were hyped over the rapper’s work, praising it at every turn. Unfortunately, I’m definitely not a member of this audience—the shock-rap of Kill the Architect was a terribly boring (and sometimes confusing) experience for this listener.

To the eyes of the international community, it was nothing less than a Russian diplomatic coup. I am talking, of course, about negotiations between the United States and Russia over the fate of Syrian chemical weapons that took place last month in Geneva. In a situation that appeared to be inevitably spiraling towards United States’ intervention, the efforts of Russian President Vladimir Putin and his long trusted Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov have quietly stunned U.S. diplomats in their pragmatism and tact. The deal, which would allow United Nations weapons inspectors into Syria and create a realistic timeline to destroy all chemical weapons stockpiles, was welcomed by Syrian president Bashar al-Assad. U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry remained skeptical about Syrian compliance, and warned that any faltering in the agreement on the side of Syria could result in U.S. military action.

Is it sad that asking for a film to be fun AND intelligent is usually hand-waved with an unsatisfactory “Well, most people just won’t get it, so why bother”? I think it’s a tragedy. I like films to be intelligent. I like ideas and consequences that make me think. I’m weird like that.
