I was walking down the street with a College Republicans shirt
on. It was right before the [2004 presidential] election and I had
red, white and blue in my hair. Then someone who was selling the
socialist paper around Library Mall called me a 'f---ing
Republican' and spit on me, said Sara Mikolajczak, junior and
current chair of UW-Madison College Republicans.

Growing up, I always dreaded the first day of school. It wasn't
because of the disappointment when yet another pigtailed brat rose
above me in the popularity chain, nor was it the disillusionment
discovering the creepy boy with glasses and the inexplicable yellow
stain on his pants also outranked me. Rather, it was during
introductions, when I was forced to announce my parents'
occupations to the class.

At 11 p.m. UW police announced that the suicidal young man
suspected to have a gun and wanting to be killed by a police

to the UW-Madison community.

There are many things I hate: tying my shoes, bocce ball and
diet salad dressing, just to name a few. However, there are few
things I detest as much as waste. I don't mean waste as in garbage.

Ethnic movies at Memorial Union, live international bands on the
terrace and a variety of food stands on State Street are just some
of the perks of attending school at UW-Madison. After being
immersed in other cultures, I did not anticipate seeing the
outright bigotry as I have.

Even before the sun eases up past the horizon, the Lakeshore
Path is dotted with runners and bikers hoping to get the path to
themselves before it's filled with families and leisurely walkers,
looking for the first glinting red leaves of autumn. A few people
walk briskly in the crisp air, swinging briefcases and backpacks,
on their way to work at the Capitol or to campus for school. Golden
light sifts its way through the trees near the Lakeshore dorms,
revealing a large pair of bulldozers near a huge pile of
brush.

Batman has the Joker, Superman has Lex Luther and I have Mr. X.
I know it's kind of a lousy name for an arch nemesis, but as far as
I'm concerned, he is so evil he doesn't deserve anything better.

Once again, University Housing denied hundreds of incoming
freshmen the opportunity to live in campus residence halls.
Although Smith Hall and the new Ogg Hall opened in the last two
years, nearly 700 students are not able to live in University
housing. In order to prevent future shortages, the university must
find a way to guarantee housing to incoming freshmen.
(09/06/07 6:00am)
Every year, UW-Madison slams the door on more than 500 incoming
freshman. As the only Big Ten university that cannot guarantee
housing to all of its freshman class, these students must pay more
for private dorms or find other housing off campus. One option
should have been considered from the start - keeping the old Ogg
Hall open.

I wear tank tops year-round because I'm terrified of getting pit
stains. I laugh at inappropriate times, like when people fall or
take off their shirt. I see every mirror as an opportunity to check
out the status of my chest area.

Starting Sept. 1, The Big Ten Network will be added to the
UW-Madison Residential Network system along with several other

torn down piece by piece beginning in August to make way for green
space along the East Campus Mall.

It was the night before graduation and everyone was giddy. The
streets were full of those people you haven't seen since freshman
year—the girl who locked herself in her room playing songs from
""Rent"" on her trombone, the boy from class who always wore a
fedora, or the girl from high school who you swore dropped out and
started stripping. Everything was wrapping up perfectly.

A wave good-bye from their freshman's house fellow on move-in
day is not the last time mom and dad will hear from UW-Madison. Say
hello to the university's brand new online-based parent program.

In the past 10 years, both the UW-Madison campus and the City
Madison have seen some major renovations and already this year this
summer will be no different.
