It's that time of year again when we pack up a dorm room's worth
of our belongings and head back to our roots. Whether it's moving
home for the entire summer or just a weekend visit, most of us will
return to high school friends, GPA-hungry parents and sheets we've
slept in since early grade school that we pray will never come in
contact with a black light.

We're getting down to the end of the year and, needless to say,
I'm waxing philosophical. As spring flowers bloom and my college
career comes to a close, it's natural to look back upon the past
four years and consider everything that's happened, and then start
screaming when I realize I don't have a job yet and I might have to
stop drinking six nights out of every week.

I'm not sure about the rest of campus, but around Lakeshore, the
kids in Short Course have a wild reputation. For them, college was
a 16-week vacation from the farm, and they loved every minute of
it.

Brains aren't everything. Smart People"" offers a
father/daughter pair of misanthropic academics as they come to
terms with their humanity. From the same people who brought
""Sideways"" to theaters, this highbrow comedy banks on superb
character sketching and a solid cast to deliver a comedy that
manages to make even the most self-involved characters likeable in
the end.

Now you didn't really think I was going to let April Fool's Day
pass by without mention, did you? I, with my incredibly overactive
imagination and love of all things remotely evil cannot resist such
a holiday of encouraged tomfoolery. It is one of my favorite
holidays, second only to the Fourth of July - a celebration for
both the birth of our nation and one of its most beloved residents,
me!

Ladies and gentlemen, please remain calm. Although the following
announcement may be rather shocking, I ask you not to panic. Unless
panicking is the best way for you to unleash the angry villager
within, because we will need that mob-like mentality for the hunt.

For Andy Cohn and Kim Vergeront's first Valentine's Day, Kim
made Andy a heart-shaped cake.
(02/14/08 6:00am)
I can't believe it is Valentine's Day already. Let the
self-loathing begin. But all jokes aside, I actually like this
holiday. The cards and the candy - obviously the candy - are all in
good fun. This year has been one wild ride, and it's also going to
mark my first Valentine's Day alone. But don't pity me everyone, it
took me a while to get to this place and I'm not about to allow
some candy hearts to get me down.

I was dreaming. Not a particularly pleasant or bad dream, but
the sort of dream that you wouldn't mind staying in for a while
because at least the act of dreaming implies that you are asleep
and don't have to deal with the endless stream of misfortunes that
is life. The point is, I was taking a nap. And then there was a
loud crash. My door flew open and in came a hulking figure with
ominous shadows crowding the door behind him, roughly shaking me
awake, saying, Keaton! We have to go right now!""

It's easy, and probably necessary, to be critical of Capitol
Neighborhoods, Inc.'s complaints with regard to alcohol-related
problems facing the downtown area. The report's proposed policies -
including tax increases on alcohol and increased underage drinking
citations - do everything to inflate the stigma that makes drinking
attractive to so many students in the first place.
