voice, the band are known for genre-defying dance tracks and
tongue-in-cheek lyrics.

It's a rare band that can take a decade-long break and return
stronger than ever, but few bands possess the rarified talent
Portishead does. Building on 1994's Dummy and 1997's Portishead,
the intuitively titled Third manages to simultaneously refine and
diversify the English trio's spooky electronic sound, resulting in
the best album of an already-stellar career.

The second star to the right will shine above the Overture
Center this weekend when the Madison Ballet's production of 'Peter
Pan' soars above the stage, sprinkling pixie dust over young and
old viewers alike.

Flesh-eating plants induce more images of a cheesy 1980s musical
(Little Shop of Horrors"") than those of blood-soaked psychological
thrillers.

You might remember the Presidents of the United States of
America as the guys behind the alternative radio hits Lump"" and
""Peaches"" back in the mid-1990s. But in spite of their two-hit
wonder status, the Presidents have continued to write pop-rock
songs, and their newest release, _These Are the Good Times People_,
is their best since their 1995 debut.

There is so little for Americans to believe in these days.
Sadly, on Nov. 30 we lost one more reason to believe. His name was
Robert Craig Knievel, Jr., but you might know him better as Evel
Knievel."" Or, if not by his name, then perhaps by his appearance -
a man constantly wearing a death-defying smirk and a red, white and
blue leather jumpsuit (equipped with a fashionable cape).

Somewhere around these parts last week was an individual wearing
a Brett Favre jersey, which isn't unusual in the least. Except for
one thing. On the nameplate, where that Hall-of-Fame name was
supposed to be, there were three letters that connote something
higher than mere mortals.

Three games out of zero hour, and the Milwaukee Brewers are no
more than that number out of first place. But in all likelihood,
we're looking at the Chicago Cubs backing into a short stay in the
playoffs.

Chuck Palahniuk may well be the most divisive writer in
contemporary fiction—in fact, calling him a nouveau William S.
Burroughs would not be inappropriate. The minimalist style and
social commentary of his novels ""Fight Club"" and ""Choke"" has
inspired a legion of young writers, while the gruesome language
typified in his story collection ""Haunted"" has sent audiences at
his readings scampering to the door.

I know I'm getting older because my wallet is getting bigger.
With each passing year it grows more bulky and more unwieldy a
thing to sit on. There is a noticeably increasing angle when I sit
down. The people behind me in class are placing bets on when I'll
finally topple.

American Idol is one of those television series that is fast
becoming such an integral part of American culture, to the point
that basic knowledge of it is practically an assumption. Now in its
sixth season, it has defied the common trend of diminishing
audiences and has in fact continued to grow in popularity. People
enjoy being able to sit on their couch and judge the contestants,
sending in a text message here and there to make their opinions
known. It's fast, easy and you don't have to actually talk to
anyone.

Hardcore moviegoers often fall into two camps: elitists, who
love the medium but typically reserve their enjoyment for the most
prestigious, highbrow films, and enthusiasts, those film buffs that
are hopelessly, giddily obsessed with every facet of the cinema.
Grindhouse theaters in the 1970s catered to the latter category of
moviegoer, serving up sleazy double, triple and sometimes quadruple
features of unrestrained mayhem and carnality.
