I discovered scrobbling a few months ago. For those of you who
aren't familiar, scrobbling is the process by which the gnomes that
live inside my computer tell the gnomes that live at Last.fm all
the music I am listening to. Last.fm compiles charts about which
artists, albums and songs are played most frequently. It organizes
this info into weekly, monthly and yearly charts and then publishes
this information - along with a running list of your most recently
played tracks - on your profile page. You can also find your
friends provided they, too, are one of the 21 million - according
to Guardian.co.uk - who have also instructed their
computer gnomes to publish their listening habits. Then you can
keep up with what they are listening to, analyze their selections
and feel superior because of your friends' great musical
tastes.

Every week, right below the end of the column, the Daily
Cardinal editors list my e-mail address along with some witty
comment. As I look back on the precious few people who have taken
advantage of replying to me, I have noticed some commonality. The
majority of people that have responded are defending some
particular artist.

At Monday's Faculty Senate meeting, the UW Division of
Recreational Sports proposed an immediate update to the Natatorium,
and a renovation of the SERF by 2017. According to the board, both
facilities are outdated and too small to meet student demands. The
estimated cost of renovating the Nat alone is $60 million dollars,
and the proposal calls for a $60 increase in student's segregated
fees for an undisclosed period of time.

thing in common: Frank Sinatra.

This year's presidential election has been obsessed about and
analyzed by every media outlet in the world. Not wanting to be left
out, I've decided to use this week's column to analyze each
candidate's top 10 songs, as publicized by Blender magazine this
July.

Optimism isn't something you encounter very often when you read
about music. Most columnists and critics spend most of their time
bemoaning the commercial nature of music, society's inability to
listen to lyrics or the fact that Disney is making a third High
School Musical."" All of these things are, without a doubt, tragic.
I strongly agree that the nature of the recording industry punishes
creativity, I think far too many people don't take the time to
explore an album's message and I pray everyday that Zac Efron be
held accountable for his crimes against humanity.

A nationwide debate on rethinking the drinking age made its way
to UW-Madison Tuesday at the biannual meeting of the Policy
Alternative Community and Education Project, a university and
community initiative aimed at combating the consequences of
high-risk drinking.

While attending a wedding this past weekend, I started flipping
through the hymnal in front of me. I have always been fascinated by
the way churches use music to represent their views of God and how
much of the greatest classical music was written specifically for
church services.

Last Thursday, the band No Age was the musical guest on The Late
Late Show with Craig Ferguson."" Their guitarist, Randy Randall,
was told that he had to change out of his Obama T-shirt before they
recorded. After the band got upset, CBS threatened not to let them
perform on the show, and eventually Randy turned his shirt
inside-out and wrote the words ""Free Health Care"" in black magic
marker on the inside of his shirt. Although the segment was
supposed to air on Oct. 27, CBS moved up the air date to Oct. 9,
most likely because the story was leaked on several well-known
music blogs and was attracting some significant attention.

A friend of mine recently got a virus while trying to illegally
download a song by Duffy. I immediately explained to her the two
things that she had done wrong. First, she tried to download a song
by Duffy. Strike one. But, perhaps more importantly, she tried to
download just one song. For me, that is a cardinal sin.

I celebrated my birthday this past Friday night. Although most
of the night is pretty fuzzy between playing the arcade game at
Wando's and singing about religion and heroin in Qdoba, I started
thinking about songs that act like time machines - the songs that
instantly take you back to a specific moment. I started making a
list of songs that do this for me.

Few things will motivate me to listen to an album more than
Pitchfork giving it a rating of 0.2 out of 10. I don't have
anything specific against Pitchfork (other than their entire system
of precision rating), but a 0.2 is something you don't see very
often. So when I read Pitchfork's review of Dan le Sac vs.
Scroobius Pip's new album, Angles, I instantly searched
YouTube for their music. After listening to Thou Shalt Always
Kill"" and ""Letter from God to Man,"" I wondered how bad the other
10 songs had to be to drag the album down so far.

I wonder why you have to see some bands live before you can
truly appreciate their music. For instance, I had heard of Okkervil
River long before I saw them live, but never connected with their
music until I saw them open for the New Pornographers last April.
After seeing them live, their music was completely different.

I think there is some secret TA handbook for how to begin the
semester. It's always the same the first time you walk into your
discussion group. The TA gets up, makes some comment like, I know
this is so lame, but we're going to go around the room and
introduce ourselves. Say your name, year, major and something
interesting."" The next 20 minutes proceed to teach you the most
important thing you will learn in the first week - introductions
are boring.
