The Student Services Finance Committee approved WSUM's 2011-'12
budget and discussed funding for the Union and Recreational Sports
Monday.
The student radio station's budget was approved at $319,523,
$6,064 higher than WSUM's proposed budget after SSFC voted to
increase worker stipends.
SSFC Representative Cale Plamann motioned to raise salaries from
the work study rate of $4.60 to $9.19, ensuring the station will
not be dependent on finding work study students for the
positions.
""Pretty much every dime seems to be accounted for,"" Plamann
said. ""But I would prefer to know that WSUM has the money it
needs.""
The committee also discussed the Rec Sports and Union
budgets.
Rec Sports' biggest request was $400,000 for maintenance fees,
raising student segregated fees that go toward Rec Sports to $2.38,
a 15.51 percent increase from 2010-'11.
Although a referendum to increase student segregated fees for
funding a new Natatorium failed last April, Rec Sports Director
Dale Carruthers said he still hoped to proceed with plans to build
the Natatorium within the next 10 years in order to avoid costly
annual maintenance efforts.
""A major renovation is never far from our mind,"" Carruthers
said. ""When students are ready for us to move forward on that,
we're ready.""
The majority of the committee said they agreed.
""We're past the point of the referendum, but we can definitely
look to the future,"" SSFC Chair Matt Manes said.
Union representatives said architects are assessing necessary
repairs for Memorial Union, including updating the theater and the
Hoofers' area while fixing accessibility and space issues.
Representatives said they hoped to offset the burden of higher
segregated fees from Union South construction by fundraising for
Memorial Union repair funds.
SSFC members also recommended that Union membership for at-large
community members increase much higher than alumni memberships,
especially since segregated fee contribution is expected to
increase by 8.36 percent in the coming year.

Recently, rumors have been circulating around campus that the
UW-Veterinary School plans to absorb the recent $800,000 budget cut
by terminating the special species program. Special species include
exotic pets such as turtles, snakes, rabbits, birds, and sometimes
the occasional domestic skunk. Cutting the relatively small, but
far reaching, program would devastate Midwest exotic pet owners and
rob veterinary students the opportunity to gain valuable, hands-on
experience. Good thing this rumor is not at all based on fact.

Hollywood really doesn't know what to do with film noir anymore.
Not since 1997's ""L.A. Confidential"" has there been a truly
successful major studio film noir effort. Instead, the genre has
been littered with missteps such as ""The Good German"" and ""The
Black Dahlia,"" forcing fans to go elsewhere for their regular
dosage of sardonic gumshoe protagonists embroiled in sleazy,
sensual plotlines. Film noir has flourished in independent and
foreign cinema, with films like Rian Johnson's ""Brick"" and the
Korean drama ""Mother"" earning considerable critical success.
Recently released crime thriller ""Winter's Bone"" tries to
continue this indie film noir trend, and while it succeeds on
several levels, it fails to inject the same freshness into its
conceit.

Oskar Blues Brewery's American pale ale had us guessing all
sorts of wrong. Dale's Pale Ale, as it's known, hales from Lyon,
Colorado. It comes in a can, draped in red, white and blue with
hint of Buffalo Bill Cody on the label. We always knew we weren't
supposed to judge a book by its cover, lest we be humiliated, but
we couldn't help ourselves; Dale's Pale Ale looked like a great
American train wreck. All those preconceived notions changed upon
first pour.

Brits love soccer, at times to an unhealthy degree. They love it
so much that they have been known to kill, maim and disembowel each
other in the name of football—and that is just the fans. The
coaches and players, if anything, are even more vile, vicious and
vitriolic, as shown in ""The Damned United,"" a biopic of former
English Premier League coach Brian Clough (Michael Sheen) and the
lead-up to his disastrous 44-day stint as head coach of league
juggernaut Leeds United.

An age-old proverb states that good behavior deserves a reward.
Moms want the chores done, teachers want completed homework and
coaches want to win games. And whether it is a treat from the
cookie jar, a gold star or a starting position, the human body is
conditioned to exchange hard work for a savory delight.

There are a million reasons to love the summer, like enjoying
warm evenings outside, seeing people in skimpier clothing or
driving with the windows down. Unfortunately, those can also be
reasons to hate summer, as in the swarms of mosquitoes that roam
the summer nights, your overweight and hairy neighbor who insists
on mowing the lawn without a shirt or the guy at the stoplight who
wants everyone to hear him rocking out to Limp Bizkit.

I was talking with a co-worker the other day about the
importance of friends. Aside from providing companionship, sharing
experiences, and talking to that girl's angry friend at the bar, a
true friend is someone who will tell you when you're being stupid.
Something like answering a phone call from your ex, or drunk
dialing your mom, or deciding that your rap name will be spelled
like ""Florida"" but pronounced like ""flow rider."" Everybody
needs a friend who will stop you and say ""I love you, man, but
‘Flo Rida' is a stupid fucking stage name.""
