I’m constantly astounded by the inherent hypocrisy of metal. The genre seems naturally limited—I mean screaming and raucous guitar can only go so far, I mean. There’s a sense of communal purity to the music as well; deviations from the established course are grounds for derision, mockery, and cries of ‘that’s not real metal!’ But despite that, I dare you (this is really happening, I’m actually daring you) to find a genre that’s sprouted such an incredibly diverse litter of subgenres. For as puritanical as the scene is, it’s also insanely multifaceted—often to the point of actual frustration. I know it better than anybody—to a little bopping indie kid like high-school me (whose ‘heaviest’ interest was the Chili Peppers) the world of metal was a terrifying and stupefying realm of upside-down crosses and burly, bearded men.

Depending on whom you ask, “Ulysses” is either the greatest work of literature, period, or the most confusing pile of what-is-this-I-don’t-even-know imaginable. There is no middle ground. It’s certainly got the credentials to go both ways.

I’m not a UW student, but I have a daughter who is… I have read some of your pieces and have been impressed by both the intelligence and bravery evident in your writing… My daughter is going on a spring break trip this year, and I would like to see a hip, common-sense guide to spring break safety that she and other girls can depend on… I think you would be a good person to write such an article, and that’s why I’m sending this email… Thanks for continuing to write your articles. I’m glad UW has resources like this available for its students.

Two weeks ago, Gov. Scott Walker quietly announced the creation of a legal defense fund in response to a John Doe investigation that has resulted in the arrest of several formal Walker staff members. The probe started with allegations of misconduct among his staff while he was the Milwaukee County Executive and has since expanded to investigating his gubernatorial campaign. Because of the probe’s secrecy—hence,“John Doe”—the full extent of its inquiries aren’t known. But the charges already levied against Walker’s former staffers expose the morally vacuous environment that has followed Walker from Milwaukee to the state house.

DULUTH, Minn.—The stage is set for what will be another chapter of one of the fiercest rivalries in college athletics. The Wisconsin women’s hockey team will take the ice Sunday against Minnesota looking for back-to-back national championships.

Rob Wilson looked cautious to turn up the heat against a faster Michigan State defense and scored a respectable six points, but was a far cry from the unconscious shooter he was in the first game of the tournament.

Every once in a while it is required that a columnist takes out a personal frustration in print, for everyone to see and comment on. Once a week usually does it. So what has me pulling my hair out this week?

Over the past four years, I have made an annual pilgrimage to Champaign, Ill. It is not exactly my favorite place on the planet: I prefer cities where trees outnumber gas stations. Still, one of my best friends from high school, Kelsey, is a student there, so I happily make the trek down once every 365 days.

I was told recently that my past columns have been “complain-y,” and while it sucks to hear that you sound like a sore loser, I am going to take the criticism and run with it. This time around, I am going for a spin on the happy side and we will see what happens.

For the impatient out there, here’s a single sentence summation of Paralytic Stalks, of Montreal’s latest sonic think piece: The sound of Kevin Barnes, frequent musician and perpetual thespian, traveling so far up his own ass that he has finally emerged out the other end and into the brilliant light of day.

Faced with diminishing revenue, public university administrators in
the U.S. have doubled tuition since 2000. As a consequence,
students are going deeper into debt than at any other time in U.S.
history. In 2010, the amount of student loan debt surpassed credit
card debt, and at the end of 2011 may have hit $1 trillion. The
current model of higher education is not sustainable.

The day culminated in members of the Tibetan group being forced off the Iowa State Capitol steps 45 minutes after the time that had previously been agreed upon as the end of their demonstration there. Emotions that were high during the day boiled over as one man was detained and many others were briskly and deliberately corralled off the steps by approximately 30 Iowa State Troopers. Many in the crowd cried as the group was forced away during their peaceful protest.

In the midst of widespread revolt against Chinese rule in
Tibet, UW-Madison’s students joined hundreds of demonstrators from
Madison, Minnesota and Chicago to protest the visit of the Chinese
vice president in Iowa Wednesday. This is the last of a three-part
series exploring the issue.

As I explained when this column debuted, Little Shapiro, Big World is about doing things that are outside my comfort zone. These have been, and usually will be, situations I actively seek out that make me feel squirmy for comedic purposes. However, there is a big difference between uncomfortable and terrifying. This anecdote falls in the latter category.

officials this week to discuss breaking ties with the company. But,
some community members say this is not enough.
