During the course of the day, while buried in the depths of the
Daily Cardinal's bombshelterstyle office, I get to hear some of the
major concerns and questions that exist in today's sports world. In
this column, I would like to share a few of those with my devoted
readers.

Nine wins and three losses is hardly a poor record in the world
of college football. For the Wisconsin Badgers, however, this
year's 9-3 season turned out to fall short of fans' hopes and
dreams. In a sense, the final game of the season, the 2005 Outback
Bowl, could be looked at as a microcosm of the Badgers' 2004
campaign.

IOWA CITY, Iowa-When the Badgers (6-2 Big Ten, 9-2 overall) lost
30-7 to the Iowa Hawkeyes (7-1, 9-2) Saturday, they lost more than
a Big Ten championship. For days in advance, the team knew the
inaugural Heartland Trophy was on the line, and they found out
before taking the field that they could claim a Rose Bowl bid and
the conference title outright. With everything to gain, the team
lost because of a lackluster defense against Iowa's passing game, a
paltry ground game and a failure to convert turnovers into
points.

Much is going on in the world of sports and more importantly, in
the world of Badger sports. Recent events have led to an influx of
speculation of what the coming weeks and months will bring the
Badger faithful. So in my best attempts to play Nostradamous, I
will attempt to successfully provide the answers to the lingering
questions in the Madison sports world.

EAST LANSING, Mich.-For the first nine games of the season,
Wisconsin's defense was unquestionably the most stable and reliable
dimension of the team. With the nation's No. 1 scoring and
third-best overall defense, UW's rise to the top of the Big Ten had
been on the shoulders of its solid and consistent 'D.'

EAST LANSING, Mich.-Down 21-14 with less than one minute
remaining in the first half Saturday, the Badgers had a chance to
tie the game heading into the locker room. They had the ball with a
first-and-goal on the one yard line with the game, and their
undefeated season, on the line, but could not gain the necessary
inches to get the ball across the goal line in four plays.

For the University of Minnesota football team (3-3 Big Ten, 6-3
overall) it is said that as the running game goes, so go the
Gophers' fortunes. The University of Wisconsin Badgers (5-0, 8-0)
are well aware of this fact as they hope to contain the U of M
ground game and recapture Paul Bunyan's Axe Saturday at Camp
Randall.

When studying the schedule prior to the start of this year's
season, most people felt Wisconsin's best break came in that they
did not have to face Michigan. The Wolverines are the only other
undefeated team in conference play. But after the first eight weeks
of the season, the bye week seems just as important as not facing
the Maize and Blue.
(10/25/04 6:00am)
Entering Saturday, the Wisconsin Badgers (5-0 Big Ten, 8-0
overall) were the most questioned undefeated team in the nation.
While they may retain that mantle in the eyes of national college
football gurus, the Badgers answered a lot of questions about
themselves Saturday with a 24-12 victory over the Northwestern
Wildcats (2-2, 3-4).
(10/21/04 6:00am)
Before the 2004 football season started, questions lingered in
the minds of Badger fans who had no idea what to expect upon
entering the first game with a made-over team from last season.
After an upset at Purdue, developing an unstoppable defensive front
and tabbing a 7-0 record and a No. 6 ranking, many of these
questions can be answered. Still, Wisconsin has four games
remaining that could change the answers and make for an upsetting
end to the storybook season. Here are some questions asked prior to
the season opener against the University of Central Florida.
(10/19/04 6:00am)
Yes, the UW football team sits comfortably at No. 6 in both the
Associated Press and Bowl Championship Series polls. Yes, their
defense has given up the fewest points in the country and is No. 2
in total defense. Yes, you can believe the hype--it's so much fun
to speculate, and this team is going somewhere very sunny and warm
in January. But put down the suntan lotion for just a second, would
you? No one wants to see you in that Speedo anyway, sheesh.
(10/11/04 6:00am)
COLUMBUS, OHIO--The stifling Wisconsin defense that has become
synonymous with football Saturdays at UW this season continued its
domination in the Badgers 24-13 victory over No. 18 Ohio State. The
Badgers' defense kept their opponent from reaching the end zone
again, marking the fourth game this season that opposing offenses
have failed to score a touchdown.
(10/01/04 6:00am)
The Wisconsin Badgers (1-0,4-0) are hoping that Anthony Davis'
return will provide a much needed boost to their offense when they
host the University of Illinois (0-1,2-2) this Saturday.
(09/29/04 6:00am)
The Badger football team is off to a 4-0 start and all is well
here in the land of Bucky. Students are really starting to get
excited about Barry Alvarez's latest installment, as witnessed by
the signs reading \Football Voucher for Sale ... UW v. Northwestern
... $75.00 obo!!!!!"" (A brief aside to all of you heartless
scalpers asking for more than $30 for Northwestern tickets: IT'S
NORTHWESTERN!!!!!! Am I the only one who remembers the NU game from
last year? And by the way, since when did selling vouchers become
an alternative way to pay for tuition?)
(09/16/04 6:00am)
Four years after UW's favorite walk-on joined the Badgers, Jim
Leonhard has officially made his mark on UW football-so maybe now
it's time to stop referring to him as a walk-on.
(09/13/04 6:00am)
Perhaps the biggest question for the Wisconsin football team
heading into this season was how well the young group of
linebackers could fill the roles of graduated Badgers Alex Lewis
and Jeff Mack. Through the first two games they have stepped up and
proven they can do the job.
(09/13/04 6:00am)
With last year's loss to UNLV still fresh in the memory of
Badger players and fans, UW's defense made sure history did not
repeat itself. Wisconsin defeated UNLV 18-3 on a hot Saturday
afternoon in front of 82,071 fans.
(09/03/04 6:00am)
Kickoff is now somewhere in the ball park of 24 hours away,
depending on if you decided to stroll on campus early and pick up a
syllabus, or if you came to the realization that academics can be
postponed another week and you picked up this copy on your way to
Riley's. Regardless, soon everything unique and sacred that comes
with Badger football will once again penetrate our lives.
(08/30/04 6:00am)
After 10 straight seasons with Kevin Cosgrove calling the shots
on defense, the Badgers will have a new coach roaming the sidelines
this year. While he did a great job during his tenure at Wisconsin,
Cosgrove left room for improvement for incoming defensive
coordinator Bret Bielema, who spent the last two seasons as Kansas
State's co-defensive coordinator.
(04/06/04 6:00am)
For the past two seasons Alex Lewis and Jeff Mack have been
staples in the Wisconsin Badgers' linebacking unit, but their
graduation has given new Defensive Coordinator Bret Bielema what
would seem to be a tough task in replacing two playmakers.
