Expectations were not high for the Wisconsin football team at
the outset of the 2006 season. But, under the guidance of
first-year head coach Bret Bielema, the Badgers had a banner year.
The team looks to punctuate it with a strong showing against
Arkansas at the Capital One Bowl Jan. 1 in Orlando, Fla.

After two weeks of knowing it would play in the Capital One Bowl
Jan 1. in Orlando, Fla., the UW football team (7-1 Big Ten, 11-1
overall) hit the practice fields Tuesday for the first time since
finding out it would face Arkansas (8-2 SEC, 10-3 overall).

The Wisconsin football team (7-1 Big Ten, 11-1 overall)
discovered Sunday it will play Arkansas (7-2 SEC, 10-3) in the
Capital One Bowl Jan. 1 in Orlando. Although there is little
history between the two teams, as they have played each other only
once, UW head coach Bret Bielema is happy with the matchup.

The Wisconsin football team accepted its second straight bid to
the Capital One Bowl last Tuesday. While the Badgers are in the top
eight in the Bowl Championship Series rankings, a rule precluding
three teams from the same conference going to a BCS bowl resigned
the Badgers to another trip to Orlando.

We've all heard about the accolades and the honors. Eleven wins,
best in school history. Bret Bielema, best-ever rookie Big Ten
coach. Entering a season with an abundance of question marks, the
Badgers somehow answered everything, except that one in Ann Arbor,
Mich. But now they sit at an impressive eight spot in the Bowl
Championship Series and on their way to a second consecutive
Capital One Bowl, right? Well, pretty much. But not really.

In sports, it is important to win the ""easy"" games, and this
season's Badger football team has done just that, closing its
season with a victory over Buffalo Saturday.

Saturday will be the last time 18 of the UW seniors will take
the field for the cardinal and white as they welcome the Bulls from

When I opened my eyes and glanced out my window last Saturday
morning, I saw fellow students chugging bottles of O'Douls. Certain
that I was hallucinating, I stumbled into the kitchen where I found
the shelves stocked with nothing but green vegetables and tofu
burgers. Still perplexed, I plopped down on the couch and turned on
the TV. Instead of seeing Lee Corso, Kirk Herbstreit and the rest
of the ESPN Gameday crew, I watched in horror as Bill O'Reilly and
Rush Limbaugh locked lips in a passionate make-out session. Just
when O'Reilly began to tug at Limbaugh's tie, I woke up.

For the past three seasons, one man has anchored the left side
of UW's offensive line. Whether it be opening a gaping hole for
running backs Anthony Davis, Brian Calhoun and P.J. Hill, or
protecting the blind side of quarterback John Stocco, senior left
tackle Joe Thomas has served as a force of reliability for the
offense.

When Barry Alvarez announced Bret Bielema would be taking over
for him as the Badgers' head coach, there seemed to be a reluctant
acceptance throughout Wisconsin. Badger fans knew the defense the
year before; stars like Erasmus James, Jimmy Leonhard and Anttaj
Hawthorne were stellar, but no one knew much about UW's defensive
coordinator.

The UW football team's slow and steady climb up the polls took
an impressive step this week, as the Badgers (7-1 Big Ten, 10-1
overall) used former national-title hopefuls Louisville, Texas,
Auburn and California as footholds in their ascent to No. 9 in the
Bowl Championship Series rankings. The ranking is Wisconsin's
highest in exactly two years—UW was also No. 9 in the Nov. 14, 2004
BCS poll.

season.

against the Badgers averaging nearly 100 yards per game and having
scored 10 touchdowns. Junior quarterback Anthony Morelli has only
thrown for seven touchdowns so far this season, and the second

Monkey Trouble!
(11/05/06 6:00am)
The Wisconsin Badgers improved to 9-1 overall and 6-1 in Big Ten
play with a 13-3 win over Penn State Saturday. In a game
reminiscent of the glory days of Big Ten smash-mouth football, the
biggest collision of the game came on the Penn State sideline.

There may not be a big BCS controversy (yet) this season, but
this year of college football has been one of the best in recent
history. Brawls, comebacks, terrible seasons for Miami and Florida
State, you name it, this season has had more interesting storylines
than most. Many of the stories have yet to be finished.

Halloween is now over, and for many it's time to celebrate all
saints that aren't from New Orleans. For me, I would like to stay
within the sports realm and rather celebrate the best
sports-related costumes from the weekend.

Wisconsin freshman running back P.J. Hill was once again a
central topic of discussion at head football coach Bret Bielema's
Monday press conference, as Bielema fielded questions concerning
Hill's health and a post-game comment he made about Hill needing to
take some ""toughen-up pills.""
