As one of the Wisconsin football team's most durable players,
senior defensive tackle Nick Hayden, scheduled to start his 31st
consecutive game Saturday against Michigan State, isn't doing
anything special to stay injury-free.

Entering his senior year of high school, Tyler Donovan knew
scouts were at his games, watching him play football. But instead
of taking a scholarship for granted, Donovan, a native of Hartland,
Wis., played hard and racked up big numbers his senior year: 1,650
yards passing and 16 touchdowns, complemented by 455 rushing yards
on only 45 carries.

The UW Athletic Department suspended running back Lance Smith in
mid-July for alleged battery and disorderly conduct involving his
former girlfriend. Conveniently, the Athletic Department reinstated
him on Aug. 6 - just in time for the first practice. We applaud the
efforts of Dean of Students Lori Berquam for suspending Smith for
five away games, but this is yet another example of misconduct by
student-athletes going unpunished. Head coach Bret Bielema needs to
establish the notion that improper conduct by his players is
unacceptable, and playing sports does not put athletes above the
law.

Wisconsin football."" Those were the two words, according to
head coach Bret Bielema, that summed up the game, especially a
critical fourth quarter that helped UW secure a 17-13 triumph over
Iowa in front of an electric Camp Randall crowd Saturday
night.

The No. 9 ranked UW football team will open up Big Ten play
tomorrow night against Iowa at Camp Randall Stadium for the first
night game since 2005.

Last Saturday at Camp Randall Stadium, Badger faithful
collectively gasped when starting cornerback Jack Ikegwuonu came
limping off the field following a tackle on The Citadel's first
offensive play.

The rivalry between the Badgers and the Iowa Hawkeyes has grown
and taken on new dimensions over the years. Iowa is one of
Wisconsin's permanent rivals, meaning the two teams face each other
every season in Big Ten play. The introduction of the Heartland
Trophy in 2004 as the prize for the winner of each contest gave
extra incentive to the teams, who already had between them head
coach Bret Bielema's move to the Badgers despite a Hawkeye tattoo
on his leg, and the Badgers' 1-4 record against Iowa in their last
five games. All these things have contributed to making this one of
the best rivalries in the Big Ten, and this weekend shouldn't
dampen the spirit.

Devin Hester caught the ball on the far sideline, hesitated for
a second, made one cut and was gone. No one touched him, no one had
a chance to touch him and once again the Bears' return man had
turned a punt return into a touchdown.

Bielema announced Monday at his weekly news conference.

After a shocking first half, the No. 7 Badgers came out and wore
down The Citadel, salvaging a 45-31 victory at Camp Randall Stadium

Putting some sort of magic number next to the leader in MLB's
National League Central Division is something less than practical.
Actually, let's put it this way: It's like Bret Bielema's thinking
of gray and white and other ruddy complements at Camp Randall on
football Saturdays. It works, but you're better off without
it.

Entering the season third and fourth on the Badger running back
depth chart, freshmen Zach Brown and John Clay brought up the
inexperienced end of a potentially devastating Wisconsin ground
attack. Neither was completely acclimated to the Badger offense,
but both had the luxury of backing up the premiere tandem of
sophomores P.J. Hill and Lance Smith while they fulfilled their
highly advertised potential.
