Of all the stressful activities I experience in a day—writing
last-minute essays, deciding what to do after college/where to do
it/how to do it/if I can do it—one of the greatest stresses occurs
early in the morning. Around 10:15 a.m. after I wake up, take a
good shower, and consider joining the rest of civilized society by
getting dressed, I pick out my underwear.

think Wisconsin was going to be?

The big winner in the box office this past week was Robert
Zemeckis' update of Charles Dickens' ""A Christmas Carol,"" a film
that has already been made countless times. Once again, Zemeckis
decided to experiment with motion capture animation, in which the
actors do their scenes in front of green screens, and then animated
versions of them are placed into animated backgrounds.

Last Thursday, Gov. Jim Doyle sent out an executive order
clarifying an existing statute on health insurance to young adults.
This would allow citizens in their 20's to be covered under their
parents' health-care plan starting January 1 next year. Any
Wisconsin resident would be eligible if you are between 17 and 27
years of age, unmarried, and either not eligible for health
coverage through your employer or your premium contribution is more
than the amount your parents would pay to add you to their plan.
Currently, only childless full-time students can stay in their
parents plan till the age of 25. But with the passage of this new
policy, potentially 100,000 young adults in Wisconsin could
benefit.

""Bright Star"" satisfies a hunger we may not have known we had:
a hunger for an elegantly done, emotional love story. The passion
on screen is burning and heatwarming and continues after you leave
the theater.

Once the previews for the Nora Ephron
novel-turned-movie, ""Julie and Julia"" hit the TV, I knew I was a
goner. A self-proclaimed food enthusiast who likes to make as many
goodies from scratch as possible, I tend to tackle projects in the
kitchen that take me hours, even days, to complete. Therefore it's
no surprise that I really empathized and connected with Julie, a
woman coping with post-9/11 stress as a customer support
representative for the New York City Building Planning
Commission.

Thirty-seven job applications, then eight e-mail rejections and
nothing more. This isn't the worst nightmare of a recent graduate,
but a harsh reality facing many college students. Even though the
economy seems to be on the mend, the employment rate is diving
further. At the university level, job losses may go by hundreds,
while working opportunities come in single digits. In this climate,
part-time positions, also a top choice for students, take the
hardest hit.

It may seem a quite bold for a player making his first start to
call that he will force a turnover on the next play. But when you
deliver on that prediction, as freshman linebacker Mike Taylor did
on Saturday against Northern Illinois, that is another story.

Now, I'm not one to claim I can foresee the future. I'm
certainly no psychic, but I did watch two episodes of ""Crossing
over with Jonathan Edwards"" once. I also totally called that Lance
Bass was gay. Swish!

""Inglourious Basterds,"" the latest film directed by Quentin
Tarantino, is obviously designed to provoke strong responses; so
far, it has certainly made good on this objective. Depending on who
you ask, the film is either morally reprehensible or an
idiosyncratic tribute to the power of cinema. But perhaps it's most
useful to think of the film as a stage in the development of
Tarantino's style: ""Basterds"" is highly allusive, remarkably
unsubtle, formally bold and insanely well-written.

The UW Cinematheque concluded its annual Pan-African Film
Festival on July 30 with Juju Factory,"" a Congolese/Belgian film
originally released in 2007. The Cinematheque's summer schedule,
while much too brief, provides us with the invaluable opportunity
to catch international films we may never again be able to see. Yet
""Juju Factory,"" which isn't currently available on DVD or on the
Internet, proved that it warranted screening for reasons beyond its
relative obscurity.

Having released three full-length albums in five years, Grizzly
Bear have taken plenty of time to develop as songwriters between
releases, and their progression is fascinating. They have
maintained a signature sound and achieved consistent, reliable
results while managing to grow sonically from album to album. On
their latest release, Veckatimest, they've reached a point where
they are now appealing to all brands of indie listeners.

Wilco does not need to prove anything anymore. Even though Sky
Blue Sky received mixed responses, they are at a point in their
career when their work has finally been circulated to anyone
interested in hearing the best contemporary music, and everyone
seems to agree they belong—at the very least—around the top.
Audiences now have their first chance to hear the self-confidence
that comes from that type of recognition on Wilco (the
album).
