Wisconsin guard T.J. Schlundt’s pregame preparation has not changed since his days of playing high school basketball. He undergoes mindfulness and meditation exercises and listens to classical music to calm himself down and hip-hop right before warmups to pump himself up.

Playing without two of its top guards Saturday morning, the Wisconsin men’s basketball team (1-1 Big Ten, 4-7 overall) looked lethargic early and struggled to slow down a high-powered Marquette (7-3) offense as the Badgers dropped the seventh of their last nine games, 82-63.

With the first explosive trailer for Marvel’s “Avengers: Infinity War” having finally been released, the world is buzzing with excitement, rumors and predictions about Earth’s Mightiest Heroes assembling to face the long-awaited Thanos and his Infinity Gauntlet. The film’s 2018 release date comes 10 years after the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s first prodigal son, “Iron Man” was released. In “Iron Man,” Captain America’s shield was included in the background of one scene, and Nick Fury appears in another to discuss “the Avengers Initiative”; both were just Easter Eggs at the time, but what became of them has taken the world by storm to become the highest grossing film franchise of all time, a cultural icon for our generation and a reason to consume a lot of popcorn.

The Wisconsin men's basketball team's (0-1 Big Ten, 3-5 overall) early season struggles continued on Saturday, as they were blown out 83-58 at home by Ohio State (1-0 Big Ten, 5-4 overall) — the worst defeat the Badgers have ever suffered at the Kohl Center.

Freshman guard Brad Davison spent the majority of the first half of Wisconsin’s 80-70 to No. 15 Xavier (3-0) pestering Musketeer players, making contested jump shots and pumping his fists in excitement. But in the Badgers’ (2-1) first loss of the season, his inexperience was also on full display.

This week, let's focus on outcasts. Everybody loves a good comeback story, rooting for the underdogs, David over Goliath, etc. It’s one of the most-used tropes in any business, and one that tends to get audiences to respond well. No one wants to read a story about a king with loads of money who continues to rule peacefully for all his days; that’s why you only see those sentences at the end of stories — unless you’re reading about politics, in which case, Goliath wins every time.

It is quite rare to see a film franchise completely reinvigorate a character without disappointing fans of the original. However, Marvel Studios has given new life to a character that has, up until this point, not lived up to its full potential. “Thor: Ragnarok” provides audiences with a fresh, comedic take on its iconic character, a gladiatorial side plot with the incredible Hulk, and ultimately a fun time at the theater.

Most college basketball fans would agree that the Big Ten is one of the landmark conferences of the sport. Storied programs such as Michigan State and Indiana along with consistently good teams like Wisconsin, Purdue and Michigan all make the race for the conference title more competitive every season. However, last year marked the third straight year that a Big Ten team failed to reach the Final Four. Additionally, no Big Ten school was a top-three seed and no one in the conference even made it to the Elite Eight. Will this be the year that the Big Ten can break its Final Four drought and a team can cut down the nets in San Antonio? Who will replace departed stars like Melo Trimble, Caleb Swanigan and Nigel Hayes? Most importantly, which team will earn the right to call themselves champions of the Big Ten? All these questions and more will be answered this year in another exciting edition of Big Ten basketball.

Freshman Brad Davison couldn’t stop smiling at the post-game dais after Wisconsin’s 85-56 exhibition victory over UW-Stout. His euphoria remained present when he walked off the podium in his red Wisconsin sweat-jacket and khaki pants, almost forgetting his backpack in the process, as he thanked the reporters in front of him before exiting the interview room.

Over the weekend, various theaters on the Madison campus played a part in the sixth annual “Tales from Planet Earth” film festival, aiming to bring concepts, concerns and discussion on the environment to movies — perhaps one of the most publicly accessible mediums of the modern age. The festival covers various topics each year, shifting between interdependent themes of hope, justice, belief, futures and environmental soundings. More often than not, these films are about humanity’s connectivity with nature as opposed to its inherent capacity to fulfill these ideas.

Last year, “Stranger Things” was the unexpected frontrunner of the entire TV industry. Relying mostly on word-of-mouth and Netflix’s algorithm, it catapulted into fame without much of a marketing push, which is a true testament to just how good it was. It also meant the showrunners, the Duffer Brothers, had a mountain of expectations to meet the second time around. Along with everyone else in the world, I was a huge fan of the first season, so when I sat down to binge the second season this weekend, I couldn’t help but have this feeling of dread. Though not without its flaws, “Stranger Things 2” is magnificent.

“Broad City” has done some really revolutionary things since its premiere in 2014. They’ve represented female sexuality in a bold and unapologetic way — they show vibrators on screen in a really normalizing way, rather than for shock value. This season, they’ve committed to bleeping Trump’s name out. “We just didn't want to share airtime. He's got enough and we also don't want to hear the word,” Ilana Glazer, co-creator and lead, explained over the summer on a press tour. They’ve also touched on topics such as depression, anxiety, sexual harassment and sexuality. But the most revolutionary representation, to me, is the way they depict Ilana and Lincoln’s non-monogamous relationship and break-up. It’s such a realistic depiction of modern dating, through all of its complications.
