Where you stand on the issue of Wisconsin's ""concealed carry""
law—which allows licensed gun owners to carry concealed weapons in
public places and businesses—likely comes down to one question: Do
you feel safer with more guns around you?

Walker worst for Wisconsin

The Daily Cardinal Editorial Board lists its most influential
figures in Madison's 77 square miles surrounded by reality
(apologies to Tammy Baldwin and Scott Walker, you'll have to wait
for our state list).

The predominant belief of many students on campus, particularly
freshmen, seems to be that if you don't sign a lease on an
apartment by December, you will end up living in an old
refrigerator box. But this belief could not be further from the
truth.

One more round of midterm elections is in the books, and it was a
sweeping victory for Republicans nationwide. While the GOP victory
may not have been as dominant as many had projected, the
Republicans were still able to take the U.S. House of
Representatives, grab a lion's share of the country's governorships
and oust Democratic senate stalwarts, including Wisconsin's own
Russ Feingold. But here in Wisconsin's 2nd Congressional District,
Democratic Representative Tammy Baldwin didn't even flinch.

Either candidate for Wisconsin's 77th district, Democrat Brett
Hulsey or the Green Party's Ben Manski, will represent a liberal
vote in the assembly. On a great deal of environmental and social
issues Manski and Hulsey seem to be in agreement and would reflect
the opinions of Madison and Middleton voters.

I can understand why my fellow members of The Daily Cardinal
Editorial Board would want access to as many court records as
possible. We are journalists and it is our job to get all necessary
information out to the public.

Once again, Wisconsin Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen is using his
elected state office as a Republican shouting point. But this time,
he's not saying anything at all.

The purpose of an endorsement is, ostensibly, for a newspaper's
editorial board to support the candidate it feels will do best if
elected; which candidate the board wants to see in office. For that
reason, The Daily Cardinal cannot give an endorsement in the
Republican primary between Milwaukee County Executive Scott Walker
or former congressman Mark Neumann.

As soon as Spencer Black announced he would not be seeking another
term in the state Assembly, a plethora of candidates jumped forth
all claiming to be his rightful successor. Long deemed to be one of
the state's greatest champions of the environment, those seeking to
claim his seat representing the state's 77th Assembly district
trumpeted their credentials at the highest levels possible.

VILAS PARK – The situation was perfect. It was a familiar
scenario; one that sets men up to become legends. And with 2009's
hero watching from the dugout, it was Editorial Board Chairman Joe
Labuz who ensured The Badger Herald would come off the diamond
victorious for the second year in a row.

The Associated Students of Madison may not be the most exciting
topic on campus. Bucky Badger's shapely body is probably more
inspiring. But nonetheless, ASM is an integral part of our daily
lives as students. The student government is charged with
allocating $38 million in student segregated fees and giving
students a voice in administration decisions through shared
governance, and it is important that the right students are put in
charge of that money.

In the Daily Cardinal article, ""Textbook Committee
Superfluous,"" the editorial board argued that the creation of a
shared governance committee that would focus on textbook cost would
ultimately not greatly benefit students.

Plans for a new Central Library died last week. Weeks of debate
were stifled by the uncaring hand of economics, another reminder
that we inhabit a cold, harsh universe that is dictated solely by
chance events often occurring at what we deem to be the worst
possible times.

We would like to address the Daily Cardinal Editorial Board
article titled ""Students should staff WISPIRG"" published in the
Thursday, December 10, 2009 issue. Many of the statements made in
this article are misleading and appear to have been taken out of
context.
(11/24/09 6:00am)
On Nov. 17, 2009, The Daily Cardinal published the opinion
column ""Race deserves no place in university admissions."" Over
the past several days we have witnessed a significant reaction to
the article by students on campus, and it is obvious the article
sparked a dialogue regarding issues of diversity at UW-Madison.

Following The Daily Cardinal Editorial Board's recent meeting
with Mayor Dave Cieslewicz, budgetary issues tended to push other
topics to the back burner. One subject that we made sure to address
however was the recent compromise Cieslewicz brokered with the
Common Council regarding a student serving on the Alcohol License
Review Committee. After convincing Ald. Bryon Eagon, Dist. 8, to
remove language making the student voting member a permanent
position, Cieslewicz vowed to nominate a student to the seat once
two new voting members were added to the ALRC.

With the recent vote on the capital budget, numerous city
projects weighed heavily on the mind of Mayor Dave Cieslewicz. In
light of the flurry of civic activity, The Daily Cardinal Editorial
Board sat down with Cieslewicz and discussed some of the more
pressing issues facing Madison.

Over a decade ago Plan 2008 was implemented to place an emphasis
on increasing diversity at UW-Madison. The plan targeted American
Indian, black, Hispanic and Southeast Asian-American students at an
early age to give them structure and motivation, primarily through
PEOPLE (Pre-College Enrichment Opportunity Program for Learning
Excellence). However, the plan's sentiments were undercut a few
years later when the university was embarrassed by the cover of an
undergraduate magazine that had a black student pasted in to create
the appearance of diversity. The university found out quickly that
Photoshop is not a proper substitute for actual minorities on
campus.

The Daily Cardinal and The Badger Herald often offer strongly
opposing viewpoints on campus or city issues. But after Wednesday's
meeting of the city's Alcohol License Review Committee, the main
organization in Madison that decides alcohol policies citywide, we
have agreed with the Herald's editorial board that a combined call
to action is needed.
