From unpaid to paid labor, our lives as college students revolve around work. Working to have enough money for weekly groceries, to pay tuition, to help make ends meet at home. Working to get “experience,” to build a resume, to get that dream entry-level job after graduation. Working to keep your GPA afloat and to get through yet another week of classes and midterms.

George Floyd. Breonna Taylor. Sandra Bland. Tony Robinson. The exhaustion that comes from being forced to recite that list over and over again, each time with an added name, is nothing in comparison to the exhaustion that comes from bearing the weight of knowing we lost another life to the systems of white supremacy and racism in this country. For BIPOC folx, this weight is increased exponentially. We cannot simply turn off the news and momentarily forget or ignore the institutions that have oppressed our people for hundreds of years — we have to bear the consequences of a system that has gone unchecked for too long. We have to demand justice and change in ways that non-BIPOC folx will never understand.

Much of our friendship is built on long nights of binge-watching, never-ending conversations and the whistling of the tea kettle. In fact, the start of our relationship was in sophomore year of high school with the simple question: Have you ever seen “Sherlock?”

The Daily Cardinal's editorial staff over the past year was comprised of mostly women, an image uncommon for the majority of newsrooms across the country. 1944's staff looked similar — when the men left to fight in World War II, women took over. It's because of them the paper is still around today, with women at its helm. Our female news editors and management team spoke with Eileen Martinson Lavine, who served as the Cardinal's editor-in-chief during this time, the first woman to serve a full year's term. She touched on her memories of the Cardinal, and the legacy she left that sticks with us today: women can do whatever the men can do.

As a low-income student, getting to college is enough of a financial hurdle, let alone facing a lack of accessible resources once arriving on campus. Despite the fact that the median family income for UW students is over $95 thousand a year, according to The New York Times, different offices and resources on campus have attempted to make themselves more readily available and inclusionary for students facing financial instability, as well as to help mitigate the academic and professional pressures associated with being a low-income student.

Finding off-campus housing for students at UW can be a financial challenge. For under $750 there aren’t too many options available to students without sacrificing privacy, space, comfort, or the furry friend from home. There are many different resources out there for students to find their ideal space, but hunting for the most budget-friendly option is difficult when you don’t know exactly where to begin.

As Tony Evers begins his term as Wisconsin's 46th governor, The Daily Cardinal Editorial Board consider some expectations for his administration.

There is little glamour to the governorship of a state — at least here in the Midwest. Many people see the position of governor as someone who appears on TV every once in a while to unveil grandiose plans that never seem to happen, or as someone who provides leadership only in times of trouble, such as during natural disasters.
