Doubts and existential crises of identity do not sneak up on us. They live and breathe around us, humming and whispering in the air. They weigh down on every breath that we inhale, and every particle of air we move through. Though, sanity dictates that we learn to exist without ever being cognizant of their eternally patient presence. How would we find the drive to keep looking for meaning and doing things we believe matter if navigating each day felt akin to swimming with an anchor? Cracks do appear though, and with the persistence of a toxic fog those paralyzing doubts slither in.

Spring break takes people to a variety of destinations. My 2016 destination was set as of October the previous year. When I was younger, I was constantly taught to act like a woman. Until one day I asked, “what does it mean to be a woman?” One of my teachers in elementary school scolded me for not acting like a girl. I did not like wearing skirts or dresses and preferred to play computer games with boys over other things. In some moments of my life I had confusions over my gender. I enjoyed playing like a girl with toys; the issue was that I was labeled as a renegade for taking interest in seemingly masculine hobbies. Gender is not only complex, but also a plays a big role in society. I would like to argue that gender should not be the defining factor in all matters. As its complex nature will tell—it is merely a part of interests, not the conclusive kind.

In many ways, advocacy and activism start with the arts. Countless individuals use their creative talents combined with personal experiences to bring attention to a wide array of political and social issues. Addressing concerns such as racial inequality, body shaming and gender stereotypes with a creative approach does two very important things. The first is that it makes the message easier to receive. For those who are pushing for unequal treatment or those who just don’t care enough to pay attention to the social issues, hearing the message in a creative manner could potentially cause them to pay more attention. It may not change their minds, but it opens a dialogue. The second is causing an emotional impact. There’s something unique about expressing oneself through poetry, music or a comedy skit. The words come alive when they are recited in front of an audience. Emotions are stronger than plain facts; that is why the arts are a perfect place to push for change.
