#5 Iowa vs. Maryland
Quarterback Graham Mertz was terrible in the red zone against Penn State. Once the Badgers got inside the 10, he struggled with the simplest part of playing quarterback: handing the ball off. In that game, Mertz fumbled the exchange with Chez Melusi from the eight-yard line and would later trip Melusi on another handoff against Eastern Michigan.
In the No. 14 Wisconsin Badgers’ 37-21 victory over the Nebraska Cornhuskers, the Badger offense looked like it finally started to modernize.
Two weeks ago, Northwestern became the first team to frustrate the Badger offense. Jonathan Taylor couldn’t break a big off any big runs and Jack Coan looked flustered. Their struggles weren’t because Northwestern was aggressive, but instead a result of a more conservative approach to Wisconsin’s offense.
Last season, Wisconsin’s passing offense was anemic.

If the Badgers want to avenge their 38-13 blowout loss to Michigan last year, they’ll have to do two things perfectly: maintain possession and get stops on early downs.
The Badgers lost a lot of talent on defense last season after D’Cota Dixon, Ryan Connely and T.J. Edwards all graduated. But if anything is clear from UW’s 49-0 win over USF, it’s that Jim Leonhard’s defense can still compete at an elite level.
After last year’s Orange Bowl in which he threw four touchdowns and was named MVP, Alex Hornibrook looked poised to have a breakout 2018. The then-sophomore was set to lead an offense returning almost all of its starters and was protected by one of the best offensive lines in college football. This Wisconsin offense was going to be one of the greatest in program history.
Seven points.
Alex Hornibrook is not the problem with Wisconsin’s offense. And no, the current blue-chip commit Graham Mertz will not instantly transform the Badgers into Alabama.
For the first time this season, the Badgers played a truly dominant offensive game in their 41-24 win over the Nebraska Cornhuskers.
Even in a down year, Nebraska is still Nebraska. As such, the Cornhuskers will likely attempt to establish the run early in the game when they visit Camp Randall. Although they rarely use formations with fewer than four receivers, Nebraska is not a pass-first team and Wisconsin’s inside linebackers will have to make good reads and tackle well to keep the Huskers from having a breakout day offensively.
In their thrilling 28-17 win over the Iowa Hawkeyes, the Badgers saved their Big Ten title hopes with smart coaching and veteran leadership late in the game.
Wisconsin:
In Wisconsin’s shocking 24-21 loss to BYU, the Badgers gotten beaten by their own usual strengths: offensive and defensive line play, fundamentals and great discipline.
